# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hurley: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Hurley.

Reading in advance? In that case what follows explains how it comes about and what to stop it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Not one fluid but two: that is how many newer diesels around Hurley and Wood End run, with diesel for your motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly.

The error lives in that gap.

## Hurley: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Dexter Lane before work, or in the car park at Hollybush on the way home.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — because a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, carries on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Hurley or out in Hurley Common.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Piccadilly or a forecourt in Hurley.

- Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- On many motors, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside your diesel filler? In that case look beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook will say where.

- The previous driver knows. Ask as you pick up a hire car or fleet car — at Wilnecote's car park, perhaps — rather than when the warning appears.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

On the day the warning appears — anywhere you are in Warwickshire — a routine to use.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, engine off, and never in a rush by Queens Way at the roadside.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Hurley already?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting the motor.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — so keep it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Kingsbury Garage, the another forecourt nearby or somewhere else.

If you're on your own drive around Hurley, leave it where it stands.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Hurley lies under 3 miles from the M42; there, use the first exit.

Mileage counts — a short hop across Hurley is a smaller job than heading under 15 miles towards Lichfield — so say about how far it went.

## Our arrival in Hurley, and what takes place next

The van reaches the vehicle wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside Church of the Resurrection, or by Hurley Primary School.

What liquid got in, the amount, and if it ran: our engineers ask because the replies decide the work and price.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody heads out.

Emptying the tank comes next, then a thorough flush of your system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

The motor is started next and checked to confirm it runs correctly, all before our technicians head off.

Unrun cars mostly mean a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.
