# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hurst Green: Why It Happens

Keep your engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Normally, if your engine hasn't turned, it is emptied and thoroughly rinsed where your car is in Hurst Green.

Reading before the event? In that case the rest explains how it comes about and how to stop it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

No single liquid but two: that's what many modern diesels around Hurst Green and Swiftsden run, with diesel feeding your engine.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other motors put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have the two together behind one flap.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in Hurst Green?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off London Road before work, or in the car park outside the pub in the village on the way home.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as easily, and after the pour starts, nothing halts it.

Whether it takes place in Coopers Corner or the middle of Hurst Green, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt around Hurst Green or a drive over in Etchingham. A few seconds, no more.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it lives if your filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Etchingham.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Anywhere around East Sussex the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, motor off, and not rushed beside Station Road on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Stage five is out.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Hurst Green?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting the engine.

Keep your ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself runs the pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car away from the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Shell, the BP or anywhere else.

Your own drive in Hurst Green is where it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run.

The next junction means the place to leave if you're on the M20, under 25 miles from Hurst Green.

Distance counts — a short hop across Hurst Green makes a smaller job than driving under 50 miles to Brighton and Hove — so say roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Hurst Green, and what happens next

Outside Hurst Green Church of England Primary School and Nursery, close to Hurst Green Village Hall or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Both the work and our price depend on three replies — which liquid, which quantity, and whether it has run — so we ask.

That quote comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Emptying your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of your system.

More than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing washes away unaided, however long it is left.

Filter cleaned or, if needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a check of your vehicle.

The motor is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs smoothly, all before our engineers head off.

Unrun cars usually need a half-hour visit from arrival. The kit is safe on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.
