# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hyde? Don't Start It

Engine off, ignition off: that's where you begin if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when your fuel system draws it in.

Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Hyde.

First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Hyde

Do:

- Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.

- Near moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.

- So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly how much, save your receipt or the empty bottle.

- Give us a postcode starting SK14 1, or whichever street is nearest, and our van reaches you straight — so ring from wherever you are.

Never do these:

- Moving your car even a few yards is no reason to start the motor.

- Turning your key to ignition alone starts the pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel won't thin it.

- Even a short distance along Market Street is too far to drive it.

- Emptying the tank on your own by the road isn't worth trying.

Rolling your car away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Hyde forecourt you're on, the Morrisons included.

Parked on your own drive? Then it stays exactly where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that is just where AdBlue settles: being denser than diesel, it sinks.

A motor topped up on a drive in Godley overnight and left unstarted counts as the simple case. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up yet — but when the motor runs, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

It causes two kinds of harm from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the components it gets to for as long as it remains there.

Lines holding AdBlue mean damage by morning for a car parked around Hyde. Just inside your tank, it stays the same.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing through them, and so the water part harms them in its own right.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Petrol put into a diesel on Shell's forecourt leaves your fuel thin — that's the main problem.

No harm is done while it stays put, blended into your diesel — only when your engine runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is plainly the wrong one.

It does not burn, and so it cannot just be run through.

Crystals and corrosion stay after the following fill, and AdBlue splits back out of the diesel, so watering it can't work. Hence the flush matters more, and turning your key "to see" costs more here than almost any other mistake — in Backbower or the centre of Hyde alike.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Not started? Then the AdBlue sits just in that tank, the easiest bit of the entire system to clear, anywhere your vehicle has stopped in Greater Manchester.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Hyde?

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars sits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Usually it is never the forecourt: someone buys a container driving home and tips it in at home.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

Rushing, outside St George's CofE Primary School, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, a parent refills the vehicle.

Close to Greenfield Street, someone pours a container in at home after work.

Or a driver new to that flap refills the vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park outside White Lion.

Hired motors, brand-new vehicles, company motors, or the spare vehicle in a home with both fuels: the least familiar cars see it most.

Same slip, an identical first response — leave it off — wherever you happen to be in Hyde or the remainder of Greater Manchester.

## Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Hyde?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank.

Your filter and lines have had it sucked through, and some running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Maybe returning from Millennium Park, or part way across Hyde, the motor might go rough, smoke, drop power, light up the dash or stall.

Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Keep it off instead of testing it again.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

On the M67, under a mile from Hyde, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not driving on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Hyde to the car park by Hyde Library is a very different job from a run towards Manchester, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the cleaning where the vehicle has stopped, and once the engine has run there is more of it.

When it's spotted quickly, lasting damage is very rare.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Hyde?

A road by Hyde Market, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: wherever your car has come to rest in Hyde, we come to it.

The work depends on three answers, and we ask for first — what went in, the quantity, and if your engine has run.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one.

A careful flush matters much more after AdBlue than with petrol, since residue will not clear out on its own.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Finally, the fuel system is primed with clean diesel.

You set off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive in Hyde or in a bay at Hyde Central.

The check before our technicians go is that it runs correctly on new diesel.

Because the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a workshop never comes into it.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

## About Hyde, for a moment

Hyde is a town in Greater Manchester, situated on the banks of the River Tame, with a mix of terraced housing and other residential areas. Hyde sits at an elevation of around 113 metres, approximately 7 miles east of Manchester. Hyde is close to several nearby places, including Kingston and Flowery Field, and is part of the larger North West region. Hyde has a population of around 29,455 people, with a range of local amenities and services.

## AdBlue drains across Greater Manchester, Hyde included

Kingston, The Railway Sidings and Flowery Field are among the places around Hyde that the same teams serve, together with most of Greater Manchester beyond, throughout the SK postcode area.

Guessing won't help close to a county line or somewhere hard to pin down; ring and ask.

A mobile service fits Hyde, a riverside town: there's no need to bring the vehicle to us, because we drain it there, on a driveway, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Hyde

Each job is different, and so not one single quote is honest.

Three things move the cost: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight space behind Hyde Town Hall.

With that reason, each call from Hyde opens by asking the identical trio — which fluid got in, how much, whether it ran — before any figure.

Those answers narrow the range right down to a single figure.

You hear that price by phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## Still next to your car in Hyde?

Then the most useful thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder, in Hyde or wherever within Greater Manchester, once you call 0333 366 0103 to say it's AdBlue, about what quantity, and if it ran.
