# Hyson Green: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page aside for now, leave your ignition and motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor has not turned, it is drained and fully cleaned where the car sits around Hyson Green.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to your motor — yet many current diesels driven about Hyson Green and Sherwood Rise hold a second fluid too.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

Plenty of cars have a single flap for both, while some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled on each forecourt visit, again and again.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## Hyson Green: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a drive off Radford Road before work, or in the car park at The Clock on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it's empty, limp mode follows.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's a second thing: a strange vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Hyson Green or out in Forest Fields.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these first, at a forecourt in Hyson Green or a drive over in New Basford. A few seconds, that's all.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- Plenty of motors give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of cars mark what goes in which inlet right there.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Check when you pick up a rental or company car — from Nottingham's car park, perhaps — not once the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever in Nottinghamshire, follow this routine.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of St Paul's Avenue.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, confirm it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Do not go on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Hyson Green?

Brief list, then. Top of it: the engine remains unstarted.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the vehicle on.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the base instead of mixing — and that's where your fuel is pulled from.

At a forecourt — Asda, Shell or another — the staff will normally help push the vehicle clear, when you ask.

If you are on your own driveway around Hyson Green, leave the car where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

On the M1, under 5 miles from Hyson Green, that means the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Hyson Green is less a job than a trip of under 3 miles towards Nottingham, so say.

## What happens when we turn up in Hyson Green

By Scotholme Primary and Nursery School, near Hyson Green Market or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

Both the work and the price depend on three answers — what fluid, what amount, and whether it has run — so our technicians ask.

That price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Draining your tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the fuel system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that clears away by itself. Hence it matters more.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.
