# Illogan: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Motor off, ignition off: that's where you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue.

Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm starts till your engine pulls it round.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Illogan, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before the motor has run.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Illogan: the first few minutes

Do these:

- So nobody can turn your ignition on, pull the keys out.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.

- Call just where you are. Quote a TR16 4 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

- No starting the engine — not for a second, not to shift your car.

- Don't switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not thin it.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short stretch down Richards Lane.

- Don't try to drain it yourself at the kerbside.

Get the people behind the counter to help you move the vehicle away from the island if you're at a forecourt in Illogan, whether it is the Morrisons or elsewhere.

Parked on your own drive? Then it remains just as it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

From a dedicated reservoir it is fed straight to your exhaust, cleaning what the engine lets out.

A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools underneath it — the very place the pickup draws from.

A vehicle topped up on a driveway in Park Bottom yesterday evening and not started since is the simple case. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up yet — though once your engine runs, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

Once it is pulled in, the harm takes two forms.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that crystallises in filters and tiny passages; and, because it eats at certain metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays in there.

Where the AdBlue is in the lines, leaving it till morning in Illogan leaves it worse. In the tank alone, time does nothing.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more major than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Texaco and you have a problem of thin fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it's in your tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

Deposits and corrosion remain through the next fill, and AdBlue separates back from your diesel, so watering it won't help. Hence the flush matters so much, and trying your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly any other slip — in Sparnon Gate or the centre of Illogan equally.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Cornwall the car is standing.

## Illogan: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Many cars place the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap, and after dark the two can look identical. No one means it.

Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Treloweth Community Primary School.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Paynters Lane.

Otherwise, after dark by The Robartes Arms, the car gets topped up by a driver using that flap the first time.

The least familiar vehicles get it the most — rentals, new cars, company cars, and the other vehicle in a home with both fuels.

Wherever you are around Illogan or the remainder of Cornwall, it is the same slip and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Illogan: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

The filter and lines have had it pulled through, and any running time carries it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Rough running, smoke, lost power, dashboard lights or stalling: any might show up, perhaps midway across Illogan or coming back from Oxland Park.

Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Keep it off instead of restarting it to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M5, over 50 miles from Illogan, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Hopping across Illogan to the car park by Paynters Lane End Methodist Church is one matter; heading towards Truro, under 10 miles away, is something else, because every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage counts.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

We do all of the rinsing where the car has ended up, and once the engine has been started there is more of it.

Very rarely does it leave permanent damage when it is caught soon.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Illogan: what it takes

The vehicle stays put, whether that's a road beside Redruth Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt around Illogan, and our van travels to it.

The work rests on three replies, and our engineers get before all else — which fluid was put in, the amount, and whether your engine has turned over.

Next, emptying the tank on the spot takes out the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue together.

A careful flush matters far more with AdBlue than after petrol, because residue won't wash out on its own.

After that, the fuel filter: cleaned, or changed if it has to be. Then fresh diesel, then a test of your vehicle.

Engine not run? Then count on about half an hour on site for most jobs.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that's the last step.

You head off as soon as our engineers have started the car, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway around Illogan or in a bay outside Redruth.

Before we leave, our technicians confirm it is running correctly with clean diesel in.

Our engineers do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never needs to go to a workshop.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

## About Illogan and where it is

Illogan is a coastal village in Cornwall, situated approximately 94 metres above sea level, with views out to the surrounding coastline. Illogan is located near several smaller settlements, including Paynters Lane End, West Tolgus, and Tolgus Mount, and is around 9.5 miles from the city of Truro. Illogan has a population of around 2080 people, predominantly living in detached housing. Illogan is also some distance from major urban centres, being around 240 miles from London.

## AdBlue drains around Illogan and across Cornwall

AdBlue call-outs in Illogan go to teams that serve the places near it — Paynters Lane End, West Tolgus plus Tolgus Mount — and much of Cornwall further out, across TR postcodes.

Near a border, or anywhere tricky to explain? Asking beats assuming, and so phone.

Illogan is a coastal village, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it sits, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## Illogan: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Because each callouts vary, a single figure would not be fair.

Three things move the price: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one rests on whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight gap behind St Illogan.

For that reason, each enquiry from Illogan begins by asking the identical trio — which fluid got in, what quantity, whether the engine ran — ahead of a quote.

Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Our quote is quoted on the call, before anyone sets off; payment comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

While our engineer is travelling, dig out your policy: plenty cover misfuelling.

## Alongside the car around Illogan, right now?

Right now, the best thing to do with the car is to leave it.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, and whether the engine ran is all our engineers ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder throughout Cornwall, Illogan too.
