# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Illshaw Heath? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep your engine off then leave your ignition off.

In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

As it is water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble just starts once your pump begins pulling it.

Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Illshaw Heath.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Illshaw Heath: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do:

- Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, and so do not bin it out.

- Call right where you are. Say a B94 6 postcode or the closest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Never do these:

- Shifting the car just a few yards is no reason to start the engine.

- Switching your key to ignition alone sets the pump running on plenty of diesels. Skip it.

- Adding extra diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short distance along Kineton Lane.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, on the verge.

The attendants working at any Illshaw Heath filling station — the Murco among them — will normally help rolling it clear if you ask.

On your own drive, do not move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor.

From a dedicated tank it is fed directly to the exhaust, cleaning what your engine lets out.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's.

It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

When your pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it waits beneath the diesel, which is why a vehicle topped up in Earlswood last night and never started stays the straightforward case, as long as no one turns the key.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that hardens in filters and narrow passages; meanwhile, because it attacks some metals, every part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it remains inside.

By daybreak, a vehicle parked around Illshaw Heath with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; if it is just in that tank, nothing changes.

The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's commonly worse than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Shell, and the problem is diluted fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is inside the tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one.

Not burning, it can't simply be run through.

Nor can it be watered down, since it splits again — and the next tankful won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the heart of Illshaw Heath or out in Box Trees, does more harm than almost any other error.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

If the motor has not run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and your tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around West Midlands your car is standing.

## Illshaw Heath: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not deliberate. Plenty of cars have the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark.

A container picked up when driving home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the typical route.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside St Patricks Church of England Primary Academy.

Near Dyers Lane, someone pours a container in at home in the evening.

Else, after dark outside Blue Bell Cider House, the vehicle is refilled by someone opening that flap for the first time.

Rented cars, new motors, company cars, or the second car in a family with one of each: the least familiar vehicles see it the most.

Wherever you're in Illshaw Heath or the rest of West Midlands, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Illshaw Heath?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

With any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, having passed via the filter and lines.

Expect lumpy running, smoke, lost power, lights on your dash, or a cut-out — returning from Blythe Valley Park, perhaps, or part way across Illshaw Heath.

Once you safely can, pull over then turn everything off — without restarting to see.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Exit the M42, under a mile from Illshaw Heath, by the next junction and stop safely, rather than driving on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That is why crossing Illshaw Heath to park near St Patrick's and a drive of under 10 miles for Birmingham are very separate jobs.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

We do all of the cleaning where your car has ended up, and once your engine has been started there is more of it.

Permanent damage is very rare if it is caught soon.

## Illshaw Heath: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Wherever it has stopped around Illshaw Heath — a filling station, a lay-by, a driveway, a street beside Cheswick Green Village Hall — the van comes to your vehicle.

Which fluid got in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has been run: we ask first, because those shape the job.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once.

The fuel system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

A test of the vehicle comes last, once clean diesel is added and the fuel filter is cleaned or, if needed, swapped.

Roughly half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when your engine has not run.

Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy filling station is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Lastly, your system is bled with clean diesel.

Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, outside The Lakes or on a driveway around Illshaw Heath.

It is tested on new diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before we go.

Our engineers do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never has to be taken to a workshop.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers want.

Guessing doesn't help close to a county line or somewhere hard to describe; phone and ask.

Illshaw Heath is a village, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Illshaw Heath?

Because the jobs differ, a flat price would not be honest.

What moves the price is, first, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where the car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Earlswood Village Hall/Parish Office.

That's why every call from Illshaw Heath starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it has run.

When they are answered, a range becomes a single fixed figure.

Our price is quoted during the call, before a van sets off; payment comes on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Look at your insurance whilst we're on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.

## In Illshaw Heath and still next to the car?

In that case, touch nothing — that's the best move there is.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us it's AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Illshaw Heath or anywhere across West Midlands.
