# Inhams End: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep the engine off — and your ignition too.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing starts until your motor pulls it round.

Caught before your motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Inhams End.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## Inhams End, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

To do:

- So no one can turn the ignition on, pull the keys away.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and about how much.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting PE7 1, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- Moving your car even a few yards is no reason to fire up the engine.

- Many diesels run their pump the instant the ignition comes on, and so keep the car off.

- Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short stretch along Inhams Road.

- No draining it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

The staff on duty at any Inhams End filling station — the BP included — will normally help pushing it clear if you ask.

Parked on your own drive? Then it stays just as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your motor.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it is squirted into the exhaust to clean the gases.

Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and an injection pump cannot take urea.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays separate rather than mixing — quite unlike fuel.

The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue ends up: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks.

Once the system runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Before then it waits underneath your diesel, and that is why a car topped up in Reach yesterday and never started stays the simple case, as long as nobody touches your key.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

It eats at some metals found in fuel components, attacking any part it reaches till it's cleared completely. And when the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and settle in narrow channels.

A car left sitting around Inhams End with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, and that is a separate kind of harm.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is commonly worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Esso and you have a fault of thin fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is inside your tank it causes no damage; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong substance.

Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Church Field or the middle of Inhams End.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever in Cambridgeshire your vehicle has stopped.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Inhams End

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles sits right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A container bought while driving home and tipped in at home, rather than at the filling station, is the usual route.

Mostly, it happens in one of a few familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Park Lane Primary & Nursery School.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Ayres Grove.

Otherwise, after dark outside The George Hotel, the vehicle gets topped up by someone using that flap the first time.

The least familiar cars get it most — rentals, brand-new ones, company cars, and the spare car of a family with one of each fuels.

Same mistake, same first response — keep it off — anywhere you happen to be around Inhams End or the rest of Cambridgeshire.

## Inhams End: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

It's been drawn through the filter and your lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

Perhaps returning from Manor Field, or midway across Inhams End, your motor might run rough, smoke, drop power, flash the dash or stall.

Once you safely can, pull over then turn it off — with no restarting to see.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

On the Great North Road, under 10 miles from Inhams End, the first junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to stop — not carrying on.

Distance matters: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in, so heading for Peterborough, under 10 miles away, gives a far larger job than crossing Inhams End to the car park by St Jude the Apostle.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

There is more to clean out once your engine has been run, and our engineers do all of it where your car has come to a stop.

When it is caught early, lasting damage is very unusual.

## Inhams End: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

A road by Whittlesey Youth & Community Centre, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: anywhere the car has come to rest in Inhams End, our engineers travel to it.

What was put in, about how much, plus whether your engine has been run: we check first, since those decide the work.

Next, draining your tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together.

Your system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Roughly half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where the engine hasn't run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Bleeding the system with fresh diesel comes last.

At that point our technicians start the car and you drive off, whether from a parking space by Whittlesea or a driveway around Inhams End.

Our engineers check it runs properly on fresh diesel before leaving.

We do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never has to go to a garage.

At the end, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Inhams End

Each job is different, and so not one single quote is honest.

What moves the cost is, firstly, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and finally where the car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Whittlesey Detachment.

That is why every call from Inhams End starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it's run.

The answers turn a range into a straight price.

Before anyone heads out, you hear our quote by phone. Then you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
