# Intack: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep your motor off then keep your ignition off.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

The trouble starts once it is pulled through your pump — it will not burn, and it will not combine with diesel.

In Intack, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your motor runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, right where your car is.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## Intack, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

To do:

- Remove the keys, which stops anyone switching the electrics on.

- If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.

- Our van finds you fastest with a postcode starting BB1 2, or just the name of a street close by, and so phone from the spot.

Things not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift your vehicle: the motor remains off.

- Many diesels run their fuel pump the moment your ignition comes on, and so keep it off.

- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it is wasted.

- Even a short stretch up Fecitt Brow is too far to drive it.

- Draining your tank yourself by the road is not worth trying.

Moving the car away from the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Intack forecourt you're on, the Esso included.

At your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, where it cleans the fumes.

A fuel pump is not designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

Denser than diesel, it sinks and collects below it — the very spot the intake sucks from.

A motor filled on a drive in Green Bank overnight and not started since is the simple one. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but when your engine runs, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny passages; and, since it attacks certain metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains in there.

By daybreak, a vehicle sitting in Intack with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; where it is just in your tank, it doesn't.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol from the Texaco.

No damage is done as long as it sits put, blended into your diesel — only once the motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It does not burn, and so it can't just be run through.

Deposits and corrosion remain after the following tankful, and AdBlue splits back out of your diesel, and so watering it can't work. Hence the flush matters so much, and turning the key "to see" does more harm here than almost any other mistake — in Queens Park or the heart of Intack alike.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Anywhere around Lancashire your car has stopped, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue still in the reservoir: the simplest bit of a fuel system to empty.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Intack?

Many vehicles place the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, now and then behind one flap, and in dim light the two can appear the same. No one means it.

Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Shadsworth Infant School.

Close to Moorside Avenue, a driver tips a container in at home after work.

Or a driver new to that flap refills the vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park outside The Intack Inn.

It happens most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Keep it off: that's the first step to the same mistake, wherever in Intack or the rest of Lancashire you happen to be.

## Intack: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

Via your filter, along the pipework, and — with any running — on to the injection pump and each injector: that's where it travels.

Perhaps returning from Queen's Park, or part way across Intack, your motor might go rough, smoke, drop power, flash the dash or cut out.

No starting it again to test: stop when it is safe, then turn everything off.

Each start pulls more of that through.

On the M65, under a mile from Intack, the first junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to stop — not carrying on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue further in. That is why crossing Intack to park near St Oswald and a drive of under 15 miles for Preston are such separate jobs.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has come to a stop.

Very rarely does it leave permanent damage when it is noticed early.

## What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Intack

Anywhere it has stopped in Intack — a forecourt, a layby, a drive, a road beside St Thomas with St Jude — our van comes to your vehicle.

The job rests on three answers, and our engineers get before all else — what got in, the amount, and whether the engine has turned over.

Next, emptying that tank on the spot removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together.

Your system is cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

About half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when your engine has not run.

The equipment is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no problem, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Clean diesel goes in to prime your system, and that is the final step.

At that point our technicians fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking space by Blackburn or a driveway in Intack.

Before we go, we confirm it is running properly with clean diesel in.

No workshop is needed at any stage, with the whole job done on the spot.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## About Intack and where it is

Intack is a suburban area in Lancashire, situated near the River Darwen and close to Knuzden Brook. Intack sits at an elevation of 166 metres, with terraced housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Intack is located near several other local places, including Shadsworth and Hole House, and is around 10 miles from the city of Preston. Intack is also relatively distant from London, at a distance of approximately 183 miles.

## AdBlue drains across Intack and Lancashire

AdBlue jobs around Intack are passed to teams that serve the towns around it — Knuzden Brook, Shadsworth plus Hole House — and much of Lancashire beyond, across BB postcodes.

Near a boundary, or anywhere tricky to pin down? Checking is better than guessing, so ring.

Anywhere the car sits — a drive at home, a residential street, a parking area, a filling station — we drain it there, and there's no need to bring it to us; which suits Intack, a residential suburb, well.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Intack: the cost of fixing it

There's no fair single price, because the jobs aren't the same.

Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what moves the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of the car, because an open driveway is simpler for a technician to get to safely than a tight space behind Masjide Moorul.

Ahead of a quote, never afterwards, every enquiry from Intack opens with three checks: the fuel, the amount, and whether it ran.

The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

You get that quote by phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Look at your policy while we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.

## Still beside your car in Intack?

Leaving the vehicle alone is, right now, the most useful thing open to you.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Tell us it's AdBlue, about how big an amount, and if the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel takes over, in Intack or anywhere in Lancashire.
