# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Intake: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

In Intake, finding it before your engine turns usually leaves a drain and a full flush on the spot.

Here in advance? In that case the rest covers how it happens and how to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels around Gleadless, as well as Intake, run on two liquids; your motor gets only your diesel.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there a spray treats the gas.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have both side by side under one flap.

Diesel gets filled at every filling station call-out, week in, week out.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

It's in the gap that the slip lives.

## Intake: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

On a drive off Frith Road before work, or in the car park outside Hollin Bush on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and if it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — but a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is a second factor: a strange car.

Nothing halts the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it occurs in Hollins End or the middle of Intake, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Intake forecourt or a drive over in Charnock Hall, take a couple of seconds over these before any goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Plenty of cars fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of motors mark which belongs in which filler right there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Darnall, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — wherever it is around South Yorkshire — a routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Ridgehill Avenue, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the car, close the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never opened off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Intake: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue sinks to the base rather than blending — and that is where the fuel is sucked from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the Esso or the Asda, ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump.

Your own drive around Intake is where it stays.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next junction is the place to come off if you're on the M1, under 5 miles from Intake.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Intake is less work than a trip of under 3 miles towards Sheffield, and so tell us.

## What occurs when we arrive around Intake

Our van reaches the car anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside Christ Church, or outside Gleadless Primary School.

The replies settle the work and our price, and so we ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it has run.

The price comes on the call, before any van leaves.

Emptying your tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

After the fuel filter has been flushed — or replaced, if needed — fresh diesel is added, and finally the car gets tested.

Before leaving, we fire it up and check that it is running smoothly.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

## About Intake and where it is

Intake is a suburban area in South Yorkshire, situated near the River Don and approximately 2.9 miles from Sheffield city centre. Intake has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are predominant, and the area sits at an elevation of around 162 metres. Intake is close to several nearby places, including Hollins End, Four Lane Ends, and Common Side, and is located within the wider Sheffield urban area.

## AdBlue drains round Intake, and South Yorkshire beyond

Over S postcodes, our vans covering Intake — a residential suburb — work the surrounding places too, Common Side and Four Lane Ends included.

Fastest of all: give a S12 2 postcode to our van.

Shifting the vehicle is not needed.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Hollinsend Park, a side street close to Hollinsend Methodist Church: we drain the vehicle where it stands.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Gleadless War Memorial.

## In short, for Intake people

Pour nothing until you have read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere across South Yorkshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same — so leave the car off then call 0333 366 0103.
