# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Inveresk? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep the motor off — and the ignition as well.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing starts until your engine sucks it through.

If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and carefully purged where the car sits in Inveresk.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Inveresk: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- Pull your keys out, so no one switches the ignition on.

- Close to moving traffic? So put the hazards on.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, so do not bin it out.

- Tell us a postcode starting EH21 7, or whichever street is nearest, and our van reaches you straight — so call from wherever you are.

Not to do:

- Moving your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to start the engine.

- Don't switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it is wasted.

- Even a short way along Carberry Road is too far to drive the vehicle.

- Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself by the roadside.

Ask the attendants to help you roll the vehicle off the island if you're on a forecourt in Inveresk, whether it is the Tesco or somewhere else.

Stopped on your own driveway? Then it remains just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust to treat the fumes.

A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

It sinks, because it's denser than diesel, and pools down where the pickup takes its supply from.

The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Monktonhall last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that crystallises in filters and narrow passages; and, because it eats at certain metals, every part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there.

Lines holding AdBlue spell damage overnight for a car parked in Inveresk. Only in that tank, it stays stable.

And there's the water: it brings no protection to the components that rely on it the most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger fault?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on BP's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that's the whole issue.

It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is in your tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

It does not stay mixed, so it can't be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Musselburgh or the middle of Inveresk.

As with petrol, there is good news.

If your motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around East Lothian the vehicle is sitting.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Inveresk: how it ends up there

Plenty of cars place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then under a single flap, and after dark the two can appear the same. Nobody means it.

Usually it's never the filling station: someone picks up a bottle heading home and tips it in at home.

A couple of familiar ways cover the majority of them.

The refill gets rushed outside the local primary school, because the dash lit up with a warning as the kids were taken off.

Close to Smeaton Grove, someone tips a bottle in on that drive in the evening.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at The Horseshoe Inn, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

Hired vehicles, new vehicles, company motors, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least known cars get it most.

Keep it off: that's the first response to an identical mistake, anywhere in Inveresk or the remainder of East Lothian you happen to be.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Inveresk?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

Through the filter, along the pipework, and — given any running time — into the injection pump and every injector: that is where it travels.

Perhaps returning from Inveresk Lodge Garden, or part way across Inveresk, the engine might go rough, smoke, drop pace, flash your dash or cut out.

When safe, stop then turn everything off — with no turning it on again to test.

Each start pulls more of that through.

On the M8, under 15 miles from Inveresk, the next junction is where to leave, and somewhere safe is where to stop — not driving on.

Mileage counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue further in, and so driving for Edinburgh, under 10 miles away, makes a far bigger job than crossing Inveresk to the car park by Duke of Somerset Camp memorial.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped.

Very rarely does it leave lasting damage when it is spotted soon.

## Inveresk: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Anywhere it has stopped in Inveresk — a forecourt, a layby, a driveway, a street by War Memorial — our van comes to the vehicle.

The work rests on three answers, and we ask for first — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether the motor has turned over.

Then that tank is drained where your car waits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A full flush matters much more with AdBlue than with petrol, since residue will not clear out by itself.

Testing your car follows at the end, after fresh diesel goes in and the fuel filter gets flushed or, where needed, swapped.

About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when your engine hasn't run.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Bleeding the fuel system with clean diesel comes at the end.

You head off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive in Inveresk or in a space outside Musselburgh.

Our engineers check it runs correctly on fresh diesel before leaving.

No workshop is needed at any stage, with the entire job done on the spot.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

## About Inveresk, briefly

Inveresk is a coastal suburban area in East Lothian, situated near the city of Edinburgh and overlooking the Firth of Forth. Inveresk sits at a relatively low elevation of 27 metres, with its detached housing stock reflecting the area's residential character. Inveresk is close to other nearby places such as Lewisvale, Pinkie, and Stoneybank, and is located approximately 5.8 miles from Edinburgh's city centre.

## Inveresk and East Lothian: AdBlue drains across the area

The vans that answer AdBlue jobs in Inveresk also cover the locations around it, Lewisvale, Pinkie and Stoneybank among them, and most of East Lothian beyond, across the EH postcode area.

Assuming won't help by a county line or somewhere tricky to pin down; phone and check.

A mobile service fits Inveresk, a residential suburb: you have no need to bring your car to us, since our technicians drain it on the spot, in a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Inveresk?

There is no fair single quote, because the jobs are not the same.

The price moves first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it depends on where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind St Michael's Kirk Inveresk.

What went in, how much, and if it ran: every Inveresk enquiry opens with exactly those, ahead of any figure, not after.

The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, the job is settled on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## Inveresk: still alongside the vehicle?

Right now, the most helpful thing to do with the car is to leave it.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether the engine ran are everything our engineers need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest across East Lothian, Inveresk included.
