# Inverness: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Pause reading a minute when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Inverness.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it occurs and the how to prevent it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Diesel goes to the engine — yet plenty of newer diesels seen about Inverness and Haugh carry a second liquid as well.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to fresh them, from a separate tank.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Filling the diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Inverness: how it happens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Margaret Street before work, or in the car park outside Esco Bar on the way home.

New-to-you cars are next, too. Hire cars, new cars and company motors put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

No part stops the tip after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Glebe or the heart of Inverness: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Merkinch or a forecourt in Inverness, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it beside the diesel inlet? In that case look below the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook will say which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at the nearest station? Ask the person who drove it last before leaving, not when the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Anywhere in Highland the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of School Lane.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It seems daft. It works.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and check once more — confirm the diesel filler remained shut throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Stage five is out.

## Inverness: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment the ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Topping up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the BP or the Morrisons, ask the attendants to help push your car away from the pump.

If you're on your own driveway around Inverness, leave it where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

The next exit is where to leave if you are on the M90, over 50 miles from Inverness.

Distance matters — a short hop across Inverness is a smaller job than heading over 50 miles towards Perth — so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival in Inverness, and what happens next

The van comes to the car anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, beside Cultarlann Inbhir Nis, or by the local primary school.

Those replies decide the work and our quote, and so we ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

The price comes on the call, before any van leaves.

Then your tank is cleared and the fuel system flushed thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither washes away by itself. That is why it counts more.

After the fuel filter has been cleaned — or replaced, if needed — clean diesel is added, and then your vehicle gets tested.

Then our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before leaving.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor has not run need roughly half an hour after we are there.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.

## About Inverness and where it is

Inverness is a city situated on the northeastern coast of Scotland, near the mouth of the River Ness, and is the administrative centre of the Highland council area. Inverness sits at a low elevation of around 12 metres above sea level, looking out over the Moray Firth. Inverness is a significant urban centre, with nearby places including Glebe, Crown, and Citadel, and is characterised by its predominant semi-detached housing stock.

## AdBlue drains across Highland, Inverness included

Being a coastal city, Inverness shares its vans surrounding areas — Crown, Citadel — right through IV postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

The van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting IV1 1.

Moving the vehicle is not needed.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to Spectrum Centre, a lay-by on the way to Northern Meeting Park, a drive.

Assuming won't help at the back of Victorian Market, on a border, or somewhere hard to pin down; phone and ask.

## For Inverness people, the short version

Before you tip, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway, leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it waits, anywhere in Highland.
