# Inverurie: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Keep the engine and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Normally, when your engine has not run, it's emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the car is around Inverurie.

Not happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the why it takes place and the how to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels around West Balhalgardy, like those in Inverurie, run on two fluids; your engine gets only the diesel.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled constantly.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less often, usually from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

## Inverurie: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and running dry means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off West High Street, perhaps outside Edwards on the way home after work.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is the second thing: a new motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Whether it takes place in Port Elphinstone or the middle of Inverurie, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Inverurie forecourt or a drive out in Balhalgardy, take a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.

- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever around Aberdeenshire, follow this routine.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, motor off, and never rushed beside B9170 on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Finish when that tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, tip gently through its own spout.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Skip step five altogether.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Inverurie already?

Do not start the motor: that's where the short order of things starts.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the attendants to help push your car away from the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Tesco, the Morrisons or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Inverurie.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

The next exit means where to come off if you're on the M90, over 50 miles from Inverurie.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Aberdeen, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Inverurie.

## When our technicians turn up in Inverurie, what happens?

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside the local primary school, close to Carnegie Inverurie Museum or on your own driveway.

Our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run, because the replies determine this work and the price.

Nobody sets off until you have heard our quote by phone.

The system is then rinsed thoroughly, after that tank is emptied.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Filter cleaned or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of your vehicle.

Then our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs properly before we leave.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine has not run take about half an hour once we are there.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Before we get there, take a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains about Inverurie, and Aberdeenshire beyond

Inverurie is a riverside town, and the teams that cover it also work the places near it, East Balhalgardy and Hillbrae among them, across the AB postcode area.

Quote a postcode that starts AB51 3, and the van gets there fastest.

Moving your car is not needed.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to Carnegie Library, a lay-by on the way to Kellands Park, a driveway.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Inverurie Town Hall.

## Inverurie people: the short version

First, the cap; after that, the pour.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless, leave it off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it waits, anywhere across Aberdeenshire.
