# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Islip

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, leave your motor off then leave your ignition off.

Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is.

It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when your fuel system draws it in.

If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and carefully purged where the car stands in Islip.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Islip: the first few minutes

To do:

- Remove the keys, which prevents someone turning the electrics on.

- Near moving traffic? So put your hazards on.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly how much, save the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Tell us a postcode starting NN14 3, or whichever street lies nearest, and our van reaches you directly — so call from wherever you stand.

Don't do these:

- Don't start your motor, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.

- Plenty of diesels run their pump the instant your ignition goes on, so leave the car off.

- Adding extra diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out instead of thinning.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way down School Lane.

- Beside the road, don't try draining it on your own.

Get the attendants to help you roll your vehicle off the pumps if you are at a forecourt around Islip, whether it's the Shell or somewhere else.

At your own drive, don't touch it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue ends up: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Woodford last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

It eats at certain metals used in fuel systems, working on any part it reaches until it's removed from your system. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that block filters and settle in narrow passages.

If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting overnight in Islip makes things worse. Inside that tank only, time costs nothing.

Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water gives none of that, and that is a second form of damage.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's frequently worse than petrol

A problem of thin fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol from the BP.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it's inside that tank it does no harm; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

It does not burn, and so it can't just be run through.

Whether your car is in Woodwell or the centre of Islip, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other error, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, and so diluting it is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the next fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever across Northamptonshire your car has stopped.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Islip: how it ends up there

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, now and then under one flap — can look the same. No one means it; many layouts allow it.

Mostly it's never the filling station: someone picks up a bottle driving home and pours it in outside the house.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Thrapston Primary School the top-up is rushed.

Close to Chapel Hill, someone tips a bottle in on that drive in the evening.

Or someone new to that flap tops up the vehicle in dim light, stopped in the car park by Islip Working Mens Club.

It comes up the most in a rental, a new vehicle, a company car, or the spare car of a home with both fuels — the vehicles drivers use the least.

Anywhere across Northamptonshire, Islip as well, the slip does not change, and nor does the first step: keep it switched off.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Islip?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank.

Through the fuel filter, through the lines, and — with any running — on to the injection pump and each injector: that's how far it has gone.

Perhaps returning from Peace Memorial Park, or part way across Islip, the motor might run rough, smoke, lose pace, flash your dash or cut out.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

Leave the A1(M), under 15 miles from Islip, at the first junction and park safely, not driving on.

Hopping across Islip to the car park by Saint Nicholas, Islip is one thing; heading towards Peterborough, under 25 miles away, is another, since each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So distance matters.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There is more to flush once the motor has been run, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has stopped.

Very rarely does it leave long-term damage if it's noticed soon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Islip?

Anywhere it has stopped around Islip — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a street beside Islip Village Hall — our van travels to your vehicle.

Three answers decide the job, so first our technicians ask what went in, about what quantity, and if the engine has run.

Then that tank is drained where the car sits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

The system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Testing your vehicle follows last, after fresh diesel is added and your filter gets flushed or, if necessary, replaced.

Engine not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The last step is to bleed the fuel system on new diesel.

Whether it's a parking space by Kettering or a drive around Islip, that is where our engineers fire it up and you drive off.

Before leaving, our engineers check it's running smoothly with clean diesel in.

As the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it.

Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

## About Islip itself

Islip is a village in Northamptonshire, situated on the shores of a lake at an elevation of 47 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Islip lies near the towns of Thrapston and Lowick, and is approximately 17.7 miles from Peterborough. Islip is also within commuting distance of London, being around 64.2 miles from the capital. Islip has a population of around 798 residents, making it a small but settled community.

## AdBlue drains across Islip and Northamptonshire

Our vans that answer AdBlue jobs in Islip also cover the places about it, Thrapston, Lowick and Denford among them, and most of Northamptonshire beyond, across the NN postcode area.

Close to a boundary, or anywhere awkward to explain? Asking is better than guessing, so ring.

Wherever the vehicle stands — your drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a forecourt — we drain it on the spot, and there's no need to bring it to us; which suits Islip, a village, well.

## Islip: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since the callouts vary, a flat figure would not be honest.

The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind The Plaza Centre.

What went in, what quantity, and whether the engine ran: each Islip call begins with precisely those, ahead of a quote, not afterwards.

With those replies, a range narrows to one fixed figure.

Before a van sets off, you are told our quote on the phone. And you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## Still beside the car around Islip?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, plus whether the engine ran is everything we need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest throughout Northamptonshire, Islip included.
