# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Ivinghoe? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does the engine.

Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water.

It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the fuel system pulls it in.

In Ivinghoe, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before the engine runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where the car is.

Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## Ivinghoe, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

To do:

- So no one can turn your ignition on, pull your keys away.

- If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and about how much, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting LU7 9, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Don't do these:

- Shifting your vehicle just a few yards is no reason to fire up your motor.

- The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to start the pump.

- AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not weaken it.

- Leave it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance down Vicarage Lane.

- No emptying it yourself, either, on the roadside.

Moving the vehicle away from the island is a job for staff to help with, whichever Ivinghoe forecourt you are on, the Shell included.

Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains just as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor.

From a dedicated reservoir it goes directly to the exhaust, cleaning what the motor lets out.

Nothing in an injection pump is made for this liquid — and none of it was meant to go through one.

It doesn't combine. Once it is poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel.

It drops, because it's heavier than diesel, and settles low where the intake draws its fuel from.

Once your system runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Until then it waits underneath the diesel, which is why a vehicle topped up in Church End yesterday and not switched on remains the straightforward one, as long as no one turns your key.

Once it is drawn in, the harm takes two forms.

It attacks certain metals used in fuel components, working on any part it reaches till it is cleared from the system. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny passages.

Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting overnight in Ivinghoe makes it worse. Inside the tank alone, waiting costs nothing.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing past them, so the water part harms them by itself.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's frequently worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Texaco and you have a problem of thin fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it is inside that tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running the engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether.

Not burning, it can't just be run through.

Nor can it be watered down, because it separates back out — and the following fill will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more here, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Ivinghoe or out in Pitstone Hill, costs more than nearly any other error.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Not run? Then the AdBlue waits only in the tank, the easiest section of the whole system to empty, anywhere the vehicle has come to rest around Buckinghamshire.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Ivinghoe

Plenty of motors put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and in dim light the two may appear the same. No one means it.

It mostly occurs at home, from a container bought en route home, not at the filling station.

A few familiar ways account for most cases.

The top-up is rushed outside Brookmead School, after your dash lit up with a warning while the children were dropped in.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Church Road.

Or someone new to that flap refills the vehicle in dim light, parked in the car park outside The Rose and Crown.

It comes up most in a hire car, a brand-new car, a fleet car, or the other vehicle of a family with both fuel types — the vehicles drivers use the least.

Wherever you are around Ivinghoe or the remainder of Buckinghamshire, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Ivinghoe?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

Via the filter, along the pipework, and — with any running — on to the high-pressure pump and every injector: that is how far it travels.

Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any might show up, maybe part way across Ivinghoe or returning from Ivinghoe Green.

When safe, pull over and turn everything off — with no turning it on again to test.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the M1, under 10 miles from Ivinghoe, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere safe is where to park — not driving on.

Distance matters: every mile pushes the AdBlue further into your system, so heading towards St Albans, under 15 miles away, makes a much bigger job than crossing Ivinghoe to the car park by St Mary's The Virgin Church, Ivinghoe.

Tell us about how far it had come.

There is more to clean out once the engine has been run, and our technicians do all of it where the car has stopped.

Lasting damage is very unusual when it's caught quickly.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Ivinghoe: what it takes

The car remains where it is, whether that's a street beside Ivinghoe Library, a drive, a layby or a filling station around Ivinghoe, and our van travels to it.

Three answers shape the work, so first we ask which fluid was put in, roughly what quantity, plus whether your motor has turned over.

Then your tank is emptied where the car sits, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing counts: the whole system is cleaned all the way through because residue will not flush out unaided.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we arrive.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Bleeding your system with new diesel comes at the end.

Whether it is a parking space at Cheddington or a drive in Ivinghoe, that is where we fire it up and you drive off.

Before leaving, we check it's running correctly with clean diesel in.

The whole job is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a garage.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

Ivinghoe lies approximately 31 miles north west of London and 14 miles north of St Albans, near the villages of Pitstone Green and Greatgap. ## AdBlue drains across Buckinghamshire, Ivinghoe included

Pitstone Green, Greatgap and Pitstone are among the towns around Ivinghoe that the same vans reach, along with most of Buckinghamshire further out, over the LU postcode area.

If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of assuming.

Ivinghoe is a rural village, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## Ivinghoe: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

No flat figure would be honest, since each job differs.

Three things move the cost: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the car is. That last one rests on whether a van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight spot behind Pitstone Green Museum.

For that in mind, every enquiry from Ivinghoe begins with the identical trio — what got in, what quantity, whether the engine ran — before any figure.

When they are answered, a range becomes one firm number.

Our quote is given during the call, before anyone sets off; payment comes on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## Ivinghoe: still next to the car?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to the vehicle.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Say it's AdBlue, about what quantity, and whether it ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel takes over, in Ivinghoe or anywhere in Buckinghamshire.
