# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Johnshaven? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the engine off — and your ignition as well.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

As it is water-based, it will not burn and won't blend with diesel; damage just starts when your pump starts drawing it.

If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly purged where the vehicle stands around Johnshaven.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## What to do straight away, Johnshaven: AdBlue in your diesel tank

To do:

- Remove your keys, and that stops anyone switching the electrics on.

- If you're at all close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly how much, save your receipt or the empty bottle.

- Give us a postcode starting DD10 0, or whichever street lies closest, and the van finds you directly — so call wherever you stand.

Don't:

- No starting the engine — not briefly, not to shift the vehicle.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue won't mix, and so it's wasted.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short stretch up Anchor Lane.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, at the verge.

Moving the vehicle off the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Johnshaven forecourt you are on, the the nearest petrol station included.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays exactly where it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, and there it treats the gas.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Tipped in with the diesel, it keeps separate rather than mixing — entirely unlike fuel.

It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

A car topped up on a drive in Kirkton yesterday evening and not started since is the straightforward one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but when the engine turns, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

It eats at some metals found in fuel systems, attacking any part it reaches till it is cleared completely. And once the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow channels.

A car left sitting around Johnshaven with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, which is a second kind of harm.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's regularly worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the another forecourt nearby, and the problem is diluted fuel.

Blended into the diesel and sitting unused, it is no threat at that stage; running the engine does the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It does not burn, and so it can't just be run through.

Whether your vehicle sits in St Cyrus or the centre of Johnshaven, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other slip, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, and so watering it down fails; and crystals and corrosion survive the following tankful.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere around Aberdeenshire your vehicle sits.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Johnshaven: how it ends up there

Plenty of motors put the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and in dim light the two can look identical. Nobody intends it.

A container bought while driving home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual route.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside the local primary school.

Someone tips the bottle in outside their house, just off Castle Street, as the day ends.

Else, in dim light outside The Anchor Hotel, your vehicle is topped up by someone opening that flap the first time.

The least familiar cars get it most — rentals, brand-new ones, company cars, and the spare motor of a family with one of each fuels.

Same slip, an identical first response — keep it switched off — wherever you are in Johnshaven or the rest of Aberdeenshire.

## Johnshaven: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

Your filter and lines have had it pulled along, and any running takes it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Perhaps coming back from Johnshaven Community Garden, or part way across Johnshaven, the motor might run rough, smoke, lose power, light up your dash or cut out.

Stop when safe. Switch off. Leave it off rather than testing it again.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Johnshaven sits under 50 miles from the M90; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and pull up safely instead of carrying on.

Distance counts: every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into your system, and so driving for Aberdeen, under 50 miles away, makes a much larger job than hopping across Johnshaven to the car park by Johnshaven War Memorial.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

There's more to flush once the engine has run, and our technicians do all of it where the car has come to a stop.

When it's noticed soon, long-term damage is very rare.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Johnshaven?

A road by James Glen Memorial Fountain, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: anywhere your car has stopped in Johnshaven, our technicians travel to it.

The work rests on three answers, and our technicians get first — what went in, the quantity, and if your engine has run.

Then that tank is cleared where the vehicle sits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is cleaned right through because residue won't flush out unaided.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians turn up, if your motor hasn't run.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Finally, your system is primed with clean diesel.

You drive off as soon as we have started the car, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive in Johnshaven or in a bay outside Laurencekirk.

It is tested on fresh diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before our technicians go.

The whole job is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers ask for.

## About Johnshaven and where it is

Johnshaven is a small coastal village in Aberdeenshire, situated near the mouths of the Bervie and Cowie burns. Johnshaven sits at a low elevation of around 11 metres, looking out to the North Sea. Johnshaven is part of a network of small communities along this coastline, including nearby Benholm and Gourdon.

## Johnshaven and Aberdeenshire: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue jobs around Johnshaven go to teams that serve the places near it — Benholm, Bush plus Gourdon — and most of Aberdeenshire further out, across DD postcodes.

Close to a border, or anywhere awkward to pin down? Checking is better than assuming, and so ring.

Johnshaven is a coastal village, and an on-site drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it is, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Johnshaven

Because each jobs vary, a flat figure would not be fair.

What shifts the cost is, firstly, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and after that where your car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind The Lifeboat House.

What got in, how much, plus whether the engine ran: each Johnshaven call begins by asking precisely those, ahead of any figure, not after.

Given those replies, a range shrinks to one fixed number.

Before a van sets off, you are told the price by phone. Then payment is on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Look at your policy whilst we're on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

## Still alongside the car in Johnshaven?

Then the most useful thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Petrol in Diesel handles the rest, in Johnshaven or wherever within Aberdeenshire, once you phone 0333 366 0103 to say it's AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and if it ran.
