# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Kaimes? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave your motor off — and your ignition too.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

The trouble begins once it is sucked through your pump — it will not burn, and it won't blend with diesel.

If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and carefully cleaned where the car stands in Kaimes.

First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Kaimes, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

- Remove your keys, which stops someone switching the power on.

- If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Our van locates you fastest with a postcode starting EH17 8, or just the name of a street nearby, and so call from the spot.

Never:

- Moving your car even a short way is no reason to fire up your engine.

- The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run your fuel pump.

- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it's wasted.

- Do not drive the car anywhere, not even a short stretch along Mortonhall Park Green.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

Rolling your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Kaimes forecourt you are on, the Gulf or any other.

If you're on your own drive, leave the car precisely where it sits.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's fed into the exhaust, and there it cleans the fumes.

Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and an injection pump cannot take urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's.

It sinks, because it is denser than diesel, and pools down where the intake takes its fuel from.

When your pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Until then it sits underneath the diesel, and that is how a car topped up in Burdiehouse yesterday and never started stays the simple case, provided no one turns the key.

After it's sucked in, the damage comes in two forms.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the parts it hits for as long as it remains there.

A motor left standing in Kaimes with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing through them, so the water part harms them in its own right.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more serious than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Morrisons's forecourt makes the fuel watery — that's the whole fault.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it is inside that tank it does no damage; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Gracemount or the middle of Kaimes.

As with petrol, there is good news.

If your motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across City of Edinburgh your car is sitting.

## Kaimes: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then under a single flap — can look the same. No one means it; plenty of layouts allow it.

A container picked up when heading home and tipped in at home, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual story.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside the local primary school the refill is hurried.

Near Mortonhall Park Loan, someone tips a bottle in on the drive in the evening.

Or someone new to that flap tops up the car in dim light, parked in the car park outside The Waverley Inn.

Hired vehicles, brand-new cars, company cars, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least familiar cars see it most.

Anywhere around City of Edinburgh, Kaimes included, the slip does not change, and neither does the first step: keep it off.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Kaimes?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

The fuel filter and pipework have had it pulled through, and any running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, lost power, lights on your dash, or a cut-out — returning from Mortonhall Crematorium, say, or midway across Kaimes.

Once safe, pull over and switch it off — with no turning it on again to test.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Kaimes sits under 10 miles from the M8; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of driving on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into your system. That is why a hop across Kaimes to park near Mortonhall Chapel and a drive of under 5 miles for Edinburgh are very separate jobs.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Our engineers do all of the cleaning where the vehicle has stopped, and once your engine has been run there is more of it.

Spotted quickly, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

## What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Kaimes

A street beside Pentland Chapel, a drive, a layby or a filling station: anywhere your vehicle has come to rest in Kaimes, our engineers travel to it.

Three replies decide the work, so first our technicians ask what got in, about the amount, and if the motor has turned over.

On the spot, the tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea come out at once.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush counts: the fuel system is cleaned right through since what remains won't wash out by itself.

Testing the vehicle follows last, after fresh diesel is added and the fuel filter gets flushed or, where necessary, swapped.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive.

The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no fault, and it's hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Bleeding the fuel system with new diesel comes at the end.

Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the vehicle is parked, by Slateford or on a driveway around Kaimes.

Before we leave, our technicians make sure it's running correctly with clean diesel in.

Our technicians do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never needs to be taken to a garage.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

## About Kaimes itself

Kaimes is a suburban area located on the riverside in the City of Edinburgh, sitting at an elevation of 128 metres. Kaimes is situated approximately 3.7 miles from Edinburgh city centre and is near other suburban areas such as Mortonhall and Southhouse. Kaimes is predominantly composed of flat-type housing, which is typical of many areas in the city. Kaimes has a population of around 4675 residents.

## AdBlue drains in Kaimes and across City of Edinburgh

Our teams that answer AdBlue calls around Kaimes also cover the places round it, Mortonhall, Southhouse and Alnwickhill among them, and most of City of Edinburgh beyond, across the EH postcode area.

Near a border, or anywhere tricky to explain? Checking is better than assuming, so ring.

Wherever the vehicle sits — a driveway at home, a residential street, a parking area, a filling station — we drain it on the spot, and there's no need to bring it to us; that suits Kaimes, a residential suburb, well.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Kaimes?

Since the callouts differ, a single figure would not be honest.

What shifts the cost is, firstly, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and finally where the vehicle is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Chapel of Remembrance.

Before a figure, not afterwards, every call from Kaimes opens with three checks: the fuel, the quantity, and whether the engine ran.

Those answers turn a range into a straight price.

Quoted by phone before the engineer heads out, it is settled that day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

As our engineer is travelling, check your policy: many include misfuelling.

## Still next to the car around Kaimes?

Right now, the most helpful thing to do with the car is to not touch it.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Kaimes or anywhere across City of Edinburgh.
