# Keith Inch: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the system draws it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Keith Inch, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before the motor has run.

First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## Keith Inch, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

Things to do:

- Pocket the keys, and that stops someone turning the power on.

- Put your hazards on if you are anywhere near moving traffic.

- Which product, and roughly what volume? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and our engineers will know.

- Call right where you are. Quote a AB42 1 postcode or the closest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.

Not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift your vehicle: your engine stays off.

- Don't switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short stretch along Ship Row.

- Beside the road, do not attempt draining it on your own.

The attendants on duty at any Keith Inch filling station — the Esso included — will normally help rolling it clear if you ask.

At your own drive, don't move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it's fed into your exhaust, and there it treats the fumes.

A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays apart instead of blending — quite different from fuel.

The pickup takes fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that's just where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Peterhead last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

It attacks certain metals used in fuel components, working on whatever it reaches till it is cleared completely. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and settle in tiny channels.

Overnight, a car parked around Keith Inch with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it is just in your tank, nothing changes.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Morrisons's forecourt makes the fuel watery — that's the whole problem.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it's in your tank it does no damage; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is plainly the wrong one.

Not burning, it can't just be run through.

Nor can it be thinned, since it separates again — and the next fill won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the heart of Keith Inch or out in Grange Gardens, costs more than nearly any other error.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere around Aberdeenshire your car sits.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Keith Inch?

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap — may look the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of designs allow it.

It usually happens at home, from a container bought en route home, rather than at the filling station.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways.

The top-up gets rushed outside the local primary school, because your dash lit up with a warning while the kids were dropped in.

In the evening, a bottle goes in on a drive near Castle Street.

Or your car is topped up in the car park at Caley Bar and Cube Disco, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It happens most in the cars motorists know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever you're around Keith Inch or the remainder of Aberdeenshire, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Keith Inch: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

Given any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing through the filter and lines.

Perhaps returning from Victoria Community Park, or midway across Keith Inch, your motor might go rough, smoke, lose power, light up the dash or stall.

Once safe, stop then turn everything off — with no turning it on again to test.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M90, over 50 miles from Keith Inch, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to stop — not driving on.

Distance counts: each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in, so heading towards Aberdeen, under 50 miles away, makes a much larger job than crossing Keith Inch to the car park by Easternmost point of Scotland.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once your engine has been run, and we do all of it where the vehicle has come to a stop.

Very rarely does it leave lasting damage when it's spotted early.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Keith Inch: what it takes

We come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Keith Inch: a side street near Reform Monument, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Before anything else we ask what got in, about how much, and whether your engine has run, since those replies determine the work.

Right there, that tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once.

The fuel system is cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers arrive, if the motor has not run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on fresh diesel.

You head off as soon as our technicians have started the car, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway around Keith Inch or in a bay outside the nearest station.

We confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel before leaving.

Since the job is done in full where the car is, a workshop never comes into it.

Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Keith Inch: the cost of fixing it

No flat figure would be fair, since every job is different.

Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, because an open drive is easier for our van to get to safely than a tight gap behind St. Peter's Church.

For that reason, each call from Keith Inch begins by asking the same trio — what got in, how much, if the engine ran — before any quote.

When they are answered, a range becomes a single firm number.

The quote is quoted during the call, before a van sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

As the van is travelling, check your policy: many cover misfuelling.

## Keith Inch: still next to your car?
