# Kelsall: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does the motor.

Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water.

The trouble starts once it's pulled through your pump — it won't burn, and it won't combine with diesel.

In Kelsall, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your motor runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps right now, Kelsall: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do:

- Pocket the keys, and that prevents anyone turning the power on.

- Put your hazards on if you are anywhere near moving traffic.

- Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting CW6 0, or the name of the nearest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll your car: the motor stays off.

- Your ignition remains off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to run the pump.

- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue won't mix, so it's wasted.

- Keep the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch up Chester Road.

- Draining that tank on your own by the road isn't one to try.

Moving the vehicle off the island is a job for staff to help with, whichever Kelsall forecourt you're on, the BP included.

On your own drive, do not move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine.

From a separate tank it goes straight to your exhaust, treating what the engine lets out.

Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump cannot take urea.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that is just where AdBlue settles: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Ashton Hayes overnight and has not been started since. The liquid waits at the base of your tank, untouched — though it will be the first thing through if your engine starts, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the components it hits for as long as it remains there.

Pipes carrying AdBlue spell damage by morning for a car sitting in Kelsall. Just in the tank, it stays the same.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector depend on diesel running past them, so the water part harms them in its own right.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more serious than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Murco's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that's the main issue.

No harm is done while it sits unused, blended into the diesel — only when your engine works on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is plainly the wrong one.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

It doesn't stay mixed, so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Willington Corner or the middle of Kelsall.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Never run? Then the AdBlue waits just inside the tank, the easiest section of the whole system to empty, anywhere your car has come to rest around Cheshire.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Kelsall: how it ends up there

Plenty of cars put the AdBlue filler beside the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap, and in dim light the two can look the same. No one means it.

Usually it's never the forecourt: someone picks up a bottle driving home and tips it in at home.

A couple of familiar ways cover the majority of them.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Kelsall Primary and Nursery School the top-up is hurried.

Near Hollands Lane, someone tips a bottle in at home in the evening.

Another version: darkness, the car park outside Morris Dancer, and someone using that flap the first time.

It comes up the most in a rental, a new car, a company car, or the other car of a home with one of each fuels — the cars people know least.

Wherever you are around Kelsall or the remainder of Cheshire, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Kelsall: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

Through the filter, along the pipework, and — given any running — into the high-pressure pump and every injector: that is how far it travels.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, lost power, lights on the dash, or a stall — coming back from Kelsall Park, perhaps, or part way across Kelsall.

Stop when it is safe. Switch off. Leave the car off instead of testing it again.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the M56, under 10 miles from Kelsall, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Distance counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system, and so heading for Chester, under 10 miles away, makes a far bigger job than hopping across Kelsall to the car park by Kelsall War Memorial.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once the engine has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up.

Lasting damage is very unusual if it's noticed quickly.

## Kelsall: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

The vehicle remains put, whether that is a road beside Kelsall Methodist Church, a driveway, a layby or a filling station around Kelsall, and the van travels to it.

Before anything else our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run, because those replies determine the work.

On the spot, your tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the fuel system is cleaned right through since residue will not wash away by itself.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that's the final step.

Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, at Mouldsworth or on a drive around Kelsall.

Before we leave, we confirm it's running properly with new diesel in.

Since the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a workshop never comes into it.

Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

## About Kelsall

Kelsall is a village in Cheshire, situated inland at an elevation of around 80 metres, approximately 7 miles from Chester. Kelsall is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock and is surrounded by nearby places such as Hallowsgate, Boothsdale, and Weetwood Common. Kelsall has a population of around 1309 residents and is located about 160 miles northwest of London.

## Kelsall and Cheshire: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue call-outs in Kelsall go to teams that serve the places around it — Hallowsgate, Boothsdale plus Weetwood Common — and most of Cheshire beyond, throughout CW postcodes.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of guessing.

Kelsall is a rural village, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it sits, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Kelsall

Since each callouts vary, a single figure wouldn't be fair.

The cost moves first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind St Philip's, Kelsall.

That's why each call from Kelsall starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it has run.

Those replies narrow the range down to one number.

Our quote is given during the call, before anyone leaves; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

As the van is on the way, check your policy: many cover misfuelling.

## In Kelsall and still alongside the vehicle?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, and if the engine ran is everything our technicians ask. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder throughout Cheshire, Kelsall included.
