# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Kelvin? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep the engine off and keep your ignition off.

Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is.

The harm starts once it's sucked through your pump — it won't ignite, and it will not blend with diesel.

Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Kelvin.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Your next steps right now, Kelvin: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

- So no one can turn the ignition on, take your keys out.

- Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.

- So you can tell us which liquid it was and about how much, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Ring just where you are. Say a G75 0 postcode or the closest street name, and nobody has to search for you.

Things not to do:

- No starting the engine — not briefly, not to reposition the car.

- Turning your key to ignition alone starts your pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- Pouring in extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.

- Even a short way up Greenhills Road is too far to drive it.

- Emptying your tank yourself beside the road is not one to try.

Moving the vehicle off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Kelvin forecourt you're on, the Morrisons included.

At your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

A motor topped up on a drive in Greenhills overnight and left unstarted counts as the straightforward one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — though when the motor runs, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the components it reaches for as long as it remains there.

If the AdBlue is in the pipework, waiting overnight in Kelvin makes it worse. Inside your tank alone, waiting does nothing.

Diesel protects the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, and that is a separate form of harm.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

A problem of thin fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol from the Co-op.

Damage just comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting inside your tank, it causes nothing.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one.

It does not burn, so it cannot simply be run through.

Nor can it be thinned, since it splits back out — and the following tankful won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the heart of Kelvin or out in Lindsayfield, does more harm than nearly any other slip.

As with petrol, there is good news.

If the motor has not run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and your tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across South Lanarkshire the vehicle is standing.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Kelvin

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors rests right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Mostly it is never the filling station: someone buys a bottle heading home and pours it in outside the house.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside the local primary school, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone refills your car.

In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a driveway near Hurlawcrook Road.

Or the car is topped up in the car park outside New Farm, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

The least known vehicles get it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, fleet cars, and the other car of a home with one of each fuel types.

Anywhere in South Lanarkshire, Kelvin included, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first step: leave it off.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Kelvin, and the motor started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank.

With any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing via the fuel filter and pipework.

Perhaps coming back from Ballerup Park, or part way across Kelvin, your motor might run lumpy, smoke, drop pace, light up the dash or cut out.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Kelvin lies under 10 miles from the M74; if you were on it, leave by the first junction and pull up safely rather than carrying on.

Mileage matters: every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in, so heading towards Glasgow, under 10 miles away, gives a far bigger job than crossing Kelvin to the car park by Kelvin Sculpture.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the cleaning where the car has stopped, and once your engine has been started there is more of it.

Very rarely does it leave long-term damage when it's spotted soon.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Kelvin: what it takes

A road by The Tor, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt: wherever your vehicle has stopped in Kelvin, our engineers travel to it.

Before anything else we ask what got in, roughly how much, and if the engine has run, since those answers decide this work.

Right there, that tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one.

Residue from AdBlue will not wash out by itself, and so the whole system gets a careful flush, which matters much more here than for petrol.

Next, the filter: cleaned, or replaced when it has to be. After that fresh diesel, and then a test of your vehicle.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our engineers get there, provided the engine has not run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Clean diesel goes in to prime your system, and that is the final step.

Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, at East Kilbride or on a driveway around Kelvin.

Our technicians confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before we leave.

The entire job is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop.

The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over once this job is done.

## About Kelvin itself

Kelvin is a small suburban area situated on the riverside in South Lanarkshire, with a mix of terraced housing and a relatively low population of around 519 residents. Kelvin sits near the larger town of East Kilbride and other nearby places like Whitehills and The Murray, at an elevation of 203 metres. Kelvin is located close to Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, which is about 8.9 miles away. Kelvin has a quiet, residential character, typical of many suburban areas in the region.

## Kelvin and South Lanarkshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Our vans that answer AdBlue calls around Kelvin also cover the locations about it, Whitehills, The Murray and East Kilbride among them, and most of South Lanarkshire beyond, across the G postcode area.

Ring and check rather than guess if you're close to a border, or anywhere tricky to explain.

Anywhere your vehicle sits — your drive at home, a residential street, a car park, a forecourt — we drain it on the spot, with no need to take it to us; which suits Kelvin, a residential suburb, well.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Kelvin: the cost of fixing it

Since the jobs vary, a single price would not be fair.

The cost moves first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it depends on where your car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Ballerup Sports Centre.

What was put in, how much, plus whether it ran: each Kelvin call opens with precisely those, before a quote, not after.

Their replies shrink the range down to a single number.

You get that quote by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
