# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Kemnay: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, done just where your vehicle sits in Kemnay, is normally what it takes if caught before the engine runs.

The remainder of this page explains why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads round Kemnay and Burnhervie carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the gas.

There's a filler on each tank.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think which cap it needs.

It's in the gap that the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Kemnay?

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Kendal Road before work, or in the car park at the pub in the village on the way home.

Then, the hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old motor — because a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

No part halts the tip after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it takes place in Craigearn or the middle of Kemnay, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Kemnay forecourt or a driveway over in Blairdaff, take a few seconds over these before any is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- On many motors, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Kintore, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Aberdeenshire that is.

- Switch off once parked — flat ground, engine off, and not in a rush by Aquithie Road on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop when that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, pour slowly using its own spout.

- Shut the cap, then check again — confirm the diesel cap stayed closed throughout. After that, start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Stage five stays out.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Kemnay?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting the motor.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the base rather than mixing — and that is where your fuel is drawn from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the BP or the Morrisons, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

If you're on your own driveway around Kemnay, leave the car where it sits.

Already run? Pull over when it is safe, then turn off.

The next junction is where to leave when you're on the M90, over 50 miles from Kemnay.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Aberdeen, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Kemnay.

## Kemnay: what takes place when our engineers get there

Our van reaches the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, beside Kemnay Library, or by the local primary school.

Those answers settle the work and our quote, and so we ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it has run.

The quote is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, once the tank is drained.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

After the fuel filter has been cleaned — or replaced, where required — clean diesel goes in, and then your vehicle gets tested.

Before leaving, our engineers fire it up and check that it's running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our technicians get there, as long as the engine has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.
