# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Kempston

Engine off, ignition off: that is where you start if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

The trouble starts once it is pulled through your pump — it will not burn, and it won't blend with diesel.

If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly purged where the car sits in Kempston.

Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Kempston: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Things to do:

- Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- So you can tell us which liquid it was and about how much, save your receipt or the empty bottle.

- Give us a postcode starting MK42 7, or whatever street lies nearest, and our van reaches you directly — so call from wherever you are.

Things not to do:

- Moving your car even a few yards is no reason to start your motor.

- Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Do not drive the car anywhere, not even a short way down Manor Drive.

- No draining it yourself, at all, on the verge.

The attendants on duty at any Kempston forecourt — the BP among them — will normally lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

At home, your car stays just as it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays apart instead of mixing — entirely unlike fuel.

Denser than diesel, it sinks and collects underneath it — the very spot the intake sucks from.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Green End last night and has not turned since. The liquid waits at the base of the tank, undrawn — but it would be the first thing through if your engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

After it's drawn in, the damage comes in two forms.

It attacks certain metals used in fuel systems, attacking whatever it touches till it is removed completely. And once the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow channels.

A car left sitting in Kempston with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't.

And there is the water: it brings no protection to the components that rely on it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Top up a diesel with petrol in error over at the Shell, and this issue is thinned fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it is in your tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, so it can't be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Gibraltar or the middle of Kempston.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Wherever in Bedfordshire your car has stopped, an unrun engine means the AdBlue yet inside the reservoir: the simplest bit of any fuel system to clear.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Kempston: how it ends up there

It's not on purpose. Many cars have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally under one flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark.

It usually occurs outside the house, from a bottle grabbed on the journey home, not at the forecourt.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar.

The refill gets hurried outside Bedford Road Primary Academy, after the dash lit up with a warning while the children were taken in.

Close to High Street, a driver tips a bottle in at home in the evening.

Or your car is topped up in the car park outside King William IV, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

It happens most in the cars people know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever in Bedfordshire, Kempston as well, the slip does not change, and neither does the first step: keep it switched off.

## Kempston: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, having passed via the fuel filter and pipework.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, lost power, lights on the dash, or a stall — coming back from Cryselco Park, perhaps, or part way across Kempston.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

On the M1, under 10 miles from Kempston, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to stop — not driving on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That's why crossing Kempston to park near Kempston World War II Monument and a drive of under 15 miles towards Milton Keynes are very different jobs.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Our technicians do all of the rinsing where your car has ended up, and once your engine has been run there is more of it.

Long-term damage is very unusual when it is spotted early.

## Kempston: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Kempston: a side street close to Catholic Church of Our Lady of Ransom, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and if your motor has been run, since those answers settle this work.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave together when your tank is drained, on the spot.

The system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers get there, provided the engine has not run.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

New diesel goes in to prime your system, and that's the final step.

Whether it is a parking space by Bedford or a drive around Kempston, that is where our technicians fire it up and you head off.

It's tested on new diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before our technicians leave.

The entire job is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

Kempston is a town located in Bedfordshire, England, positioned near the River Great Ouse. It sits close to Bedford, with the river forming a natural boundary between the town and the neighbouring Queen's Park area. ## AdBlue drains across Bedfordshire, Kempston included

AdBlue jobs around Kempston are passed to vans that cover the towns near it — Pilgrims Rest, Kempston Church End as well as Great Denham — and much of Bedfordshire further out, across MK postcodes.

Guessing won't help by a border or anywhere hard to pin down; phone and check.

Kempston is a riverside town, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Kempston: the cost of fixing it

Every job is different, and so no single price is honest.

Three things change the price: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the car is. That last one turns on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight gap behind Cryselco Park Pavilion.

Which fluid was put in, how much, plus if the engine ran: every Kempston enquiry begins with precisely those, before any figure, never after.

Given them, the range narrows to one firm figure.

Priced by phone before the engineer heads out, the job is settled that day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## In Kempston and still alongside the car?

Then, do nothing — that's the best move there is.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, plus if it ran are everything we ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder throughout Bedfordshire, Kempston included.
