# Kemsley: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave the motor off then leave the ignition off.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm happens till your motor sucks it through.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly rinsed where your car stands around Kemsley.

Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Kemsley

Do:

- Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.

- If you're anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.

- Which fluid, and roughly how much volume? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and our engineers can know.

- Ring right where you are. Say a ME10 2 postcode or the closest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Don't:

- No starting the engine — not briefly, not to reposition the car.

- Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it's wasted.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way along Grovehurst Avenue.

- No draining it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

The attendants on duty at any Kemsley filling station — the Asda among them — will normally help rolling it clear if you ask.

Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains exactly as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

It doesn't blend. Once it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel.

It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

Simplest of all: one that got AdBlue in Murston overnight and hasn't turned since. The liquid waits at the foot of your tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through once your engine runs, before any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of harm from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that crystallises in filters and narrow passages; meanwhile, because it attacks some metals, each part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains inside.

Overnight, a car sitting in Kemsley with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; if it is only in the tank, nothing changes.

Then there is the water: it offers no protection to the parts that rely on it most — the injection pump and each injector.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger fault?

Petrol put into a diesel on BP's forecourt makes the fuel watery — that's the whole issue.

Harm just comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and left inside your tank, it causes nothing.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one.

It doesn't burn, and so it cannot just be run through.

Nor can it be thinned, because it splits back out — and the next fill won't clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Kemsley or out in Chalkwell, does more harm than nearly any other error.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Not run? Then the AdBlue waits just in the tank, the easiest bit of the whole system to clear, wherever the car has stopped across Kent.

## Kemsley: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars waits right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Kemsley Primary Academy the refill is rushed.

After work, a bottle goes in on a driveway near Coldharbour Lane.

Or your car is topped up in the car park outside Dancing Dog Saloon, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

The least familiar vehicles see it most — hire cars, new ones, company ones, and the other motor in a family with one of each fuels.

Anywhere across Kent, Kemsley included, the slip does not change, and neither does the first response: keep it switched off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Kemsley, and the engine started?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

With any running time, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, having passed via the fuel filter and lines.

Watch for lumpy running, exhaust smoke, lost power, warnings on your dash, or a cut-out — returning from Kemsley Recreation Ground, say, or part way across Kemsley.

Pull over when safe. Turn off. Leave it off rather than restarting it to check.

Every start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M2, under 5 miles from Kemsley, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Distance matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue further into your system, so heading for Southend-on-Sea, under 15 miles away, gives a much larger job than hopping across Kemsley to the car park by Kemsley Community Centre.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after your engine has been started.

When it's noticed soon, lasting damage is very rare.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Kemsley?

The car stays put, whether that is a road near Milton Parish Church, a driveway, a layby or a filling station in Kemsley, and our van comes to it.

Three answers shape the work, so first our engineers ask which fluid got in, about what quantity, plus if your motor has run.

Next, emptying the tank on the spot removes the polluted diesel and the AdBlue in one go.

The fuel system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Next, your filter: cleaned, or replaced when it must be. After that fresh diesel, then a test of your car.

Not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Priming your system with clean diesel comes at the end.

Whether it is a parking space by the nearest station or a driveway in Kemsley, that is where our technicians start it and you drive off.

Our technicians check it runs smoothly on clean diesel before we go.

No garage is required at any point, with the whole job done then and there.

The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

## About Kemsley itself

Kemsley is a suburban area located on the north Kent coast, situated near the mouth of the Swale estuary at an elevation of around 14 metres. Kemsley lies within commuting distance of London, approximately 38.6 miles to the west, and is close to the nearby towns of Southend-on-Sea and Milton Regis. Kemsley has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are particularly prevalent in the area. Kemsley is bordered by other local places, including Howt Green and Iwade.

## AdBlue drains around Kemsley and across Kent

Our teams that answer AdBlue call-outs in Kemsley also cover the places round it, Howt Green, Milton Regis and Iwade among them, and most of Kent beyond, across the ME postcode area.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than guessing.

Kemsley is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it sits, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Kemsley

Because the jobs vary, a flat figure would not be fair.

What moves the price is, first of all, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and after that where the vehicle is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight space behind Church Hall.

Before a figure, never afterwards, every call from Kemsley opens with three questions: the liquid, the quantity, and if it ran.

The replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Quoted by phone before the engineer heads out, it is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.

## Still alongside the vehicle around Kemsley?

Right now, the best thing to do with the car is to leave it.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Tell us it's AdBlue, about how big an amount, and whether the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel handles it, across Kemsley or wherever within Kent.
