# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Kennoway: How It Happens and How to Prevent It

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page aside a moment, leave the ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Kennoway.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds your motor — yet plenty of newer diesels driven about Kennoway and Windygates carry another liquid too.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to clean it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt visit, again and again.

Much less regularly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Kennoway: how it takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

Haste follows from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Leven Road, or heading home in the car park outside the pub in the village.

Unfamiliar motors are next, too. Hire cars, new cars and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

It's seconds, be it in Bonnybank or bang in the centre of Kennoway.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Whether a Kennoway forecourt or a driveway over in Kirkland Dam, take a few seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- On many cars, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Cameron Bridge.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere around Fife the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Not in a rush on the side of New Road, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, but it works.

- The two under a single flap? So make sure the lid on your diesel filler is still shut ahead of raising the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start your car, close the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never came off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Step five is out.

## Kennoway: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting your engine.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — JET, BP or any other — the staff will normally help roll your car away, when you ask.

If you're on your own driveway in Kennoway, leave the car where it stands.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Kennoway lies under 15 miles from the M90; on it, use the first junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Kennoway is less a job than a run of under 25 miles to Dundee, so tell us.

## Our arrival in Kennoway, and what happens next

Anywhere your car has stopped, whether outside the local primary school, near Kennoway Library or on your own drive, the van comes to it.

The replies decide the work and our price, so our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

You get that price by phone, before anyone sets off.

The system is then rinsed thoroughly, once your tank is cleared.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol.

The filter cleaned or, if it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a test of your car.

The motor is fired up next and tested to be sure it runs correctly, all before we head off.

If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
