# Kensey Valley Meadow: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Kensey Valley Meadow.

Reading before the event? Then what follows covers why it happens and what to prevent it ever happening.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Not one liquid but two: that's how many newer diesels near Kensey Valley Meadow and Dutson run, with diesel for your engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Many of motors share a single flap for both, while others put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Kensey Valley Meadow?

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

Haste follows from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Kensey Court, or heading home in the car park at Launceston Arms.

New-to-you motors are second, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company cars place their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

It's a few seconds, be it out in Launceston or right in the heart of Kensey Valley Meadow.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Newport or a forecourt around Kensey Valley Meadow.

- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Gunnislake, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

When the light goes on, anywhere around Cornwall, follow this routine.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, motor stopped, and not in a rush beside A388 at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, yet it works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Discover during the second or third stage that the bottle went into the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Do not go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Kensey Valley Meadow?

Do not start your motor: that's how the short order of things begins.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Tesco or the BP, ask the attendants to help push your car clear of the pump.

## Our arrival in Kensey Valley Meadow, and what takes place next

The van reaches the car wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside St Mary Magdalene, or by Windmill Hill Academy.

The answers decide the work and our quote, so we ask what was put in, about how much, and if it's run.

The price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Then the tank is drained and the system cleaned thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of it clears out by itself. That is why it matters more.

After your filter is flushed — or renewed, if needed — clean diesel goes in, and finally your vehicle is tested.

Next our engineers fire it up and check it runs correctly before we go.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after our technicians get there, provided your motor hasn't run — and the pumps we use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.
