# Kensington Park: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page down for now, leave your ignition and motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Kensington Park.

Reading before the event? In that case the rest covers why it happens and what to prevent it ever happening.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Diesel goes to your motor — yet many current diesels driven round Kensington Park and St Philips Marsh carry a second fluid too.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler for every tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many cars. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually comes from a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think which filler it needs.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Kensington Park: how it happens

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Kensington Park Road before work, or in the car park at Lodekka heading home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and if it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

Next, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — since a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

Third, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as easily, and after the tip begins, nothing stops it.

Upper Knowle or the heart of Kensington Park: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Kensington Park forecourt or a driveway out in Broom Hill, spend a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Bristol Temple Meads, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light comes on, wherever around Bristol, follow this routine.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Thiery Road.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Do not go on to step five.

## Kensington Park: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

The staff at Texaco, Tesco or any forecourt will usually lend a hand to push your car away if you ask.

If you are on your own drive in Kensington Park, leave it where it stands.

Already started? Stop when it is sensible, then turn off.

The next junction is the place to leave if you are on the M32, under 3 miles from Kensington Park.

A short hop across Kensington Park is a smaller job than a run towards Bristol, under 3 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Kensington Park, and what occurs next

The van reaches the car anywhere it stopped — your own drive, near War memorial, or outside Holymead Primary School.

Both the work and the quote rest on three replies — which liquid, which amount, and whether it has run — so we ask.

You get that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out.

Draining your tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We do not go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our technicians get there, provided your motor has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
