# Keswick: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Leave your engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Around Keswick, finding it before the motor runs normally leaves a drain and a full flush where it stands.

Not happened yet? Below, the page explains the why it takes place and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Plenty of newer diesels in Great Crosthwaite, as well as Keswick, carry on two fluids; the motor takes only the diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on a lot of motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

Far less often, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur in Keswick?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from your car, and running out means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Bank Street, or at Bank Tavern on the way home that evening.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old car — because a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once begun, carries on.

Whether it takes place in Briar Rigg or the middle of Keswick, it is the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Keswick forecourt or a drive over in Brigham, take a few seconds over these before any goes in.

- Read the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually aren't.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Check for it.

- The handbook shows which it lives if your filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Cumbria that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Museum Square.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop when that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour slowly through the own spout.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Keswick: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Do not start the engine: that is how the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

The staff at Shell, another forecourt nearby or another forecourt will normally help to push your car away when you ask.

If you are on your own driveway around Keswick, leave the car where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Keswick sits under 25 miles from the M6; on it, use the first exit.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Keswick is a smaller job than driving under 25 miles to Carlisle — so say roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Keswick, and what occurs next

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St Herbert's CofE (VA) Primary and Nursery School, close to Keswick Town Hall or on your own drive.

What liquid went in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask because those replies set the work and quote.

No one heads out until you've heard our price over the phone.

The system is then rinsed thoroughly, after that tank is drained.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. Hence it matters more.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Before we leave, we start the car and check that it is running smoothly.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.

## AdBlue drains in Keswick and across Cumbria

Throughout CA postcodes, the teams that cover Keswick — a town — work the nearby spots too, Chestnut Hill and High Hill among them.

Give a postcode beginning CA12 5, and our van arrives fastest.

The vehicle doesn't need to shift.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street near Puzzling Place, a lay-by on the way to Hope Park Pitch & Putt, a drive.

Tricky to explain, like the back of Lucy Pittaway Art Gallery? Close to a county line? Checking is better than assuming, so ring.

## In short, for Keswick people

Read the cap before you pour.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave it off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it sits, anywhere in Cumbria.
