# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Kilbarchan: How It Happens and How to Prevent It

Pause here for a moment if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Kilbarchan.

The rest of this page covers why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you are reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds the engine — but plenty of current diesels driven round Kilbarchan and Cartside hold a second fluid as well.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where spraying treats the fumes.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have both together under one flap.

Diesel gets filled on every forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## Kilbarchan: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things coming up together.

On a drive off Barn Green before work, or in the car park at the pub in the village heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — since a rental car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Whether it takes place in Tandlehill or the middle of Kilbarchan, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Kilbarchan forecourt or a drive over in Corseford, take a couple of seconds on these before any is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Many motors give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — many vehicles mark which belongs in which filler just there.

- The handbook says which it lives if the filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Milliken Park.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

On the day the light appears — anywhere it is around Renfrewshire — a routine to follow.

- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Church Street.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- Both behind a single flap? Then make sure the cap on your diesel side is still closed ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the car, shut the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Find during the second or third stage that the bottle went into the wrong tank? That is where you stop.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Kilbarchan: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

On a forecourt — Morrisons, Tesco or any other — the staff will usually help push the vehicle clear, when you ask.

If you're on your own drive around Kilbarchan, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

Kilbarchan sits under 5 miles from the M8; there, use the next exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Glasgow, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Kilbarchan.

## Our arrival in Kilbarchan, and what happens next

The van reaches your car anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, near Weaver's Cottage, or outside the local primary school.

We ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run, since the replies decide this work and our quote.

You get that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol.

Testing is at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

Then our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly before we go.

Unstarted vehicles usually need a half-hour visit from arrival. The kit is safe on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.

No need to shift the vehicle.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Craigton Wood, a side street close to Mary Barbour Cairn: our engineers drain the car where it sits.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of The Steeple? By a border? Asking beats assuming, and so ring.
