# Killead: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then put this page aside a moment, leave your ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out right where your car sits in Killead, is normally all it takes if caught before the engine runs.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Not one liquid but two: that's what plenty of modern diesels near Killead and Antrim carry, with diesel feeding the motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where a spray cleans the gas.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

It is in that gap that the mistake happens.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Killead: how it happens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Heugh Road before work, or in the car park outside the pub in the village on the way home.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part halts the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Dunadry or the middle of Killead: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt in Killead or a drive over in Templepatrick. A few seconds, that's all.

- Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Wherever in County Antrim the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of North Crescent.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and look again that your diesel cap was never came off.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Killead?

Do not start the motor: that's how the short order of things begins.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the base instead of blending — and that is where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the the nearest petrol station, the another forecourt nearby or anywhere else.

Your own driveway in Killead is the place it should stay.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Killead lies over 50 miles from the M77; there, take the next junction.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Killead is a smaller job than driving under 15 miles towards Belfast — so say about how far it went.

## Killead: what occurs when we turn up

Wherever the car has stopped, be it by the local primary school, near the centre or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

Both the work and our price rest on three answers — what fluid, what quantity, and whether it's run — so our engineers ask.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Your system is then rinsed thoroughly, after your tank is drained.

Much more than with petrol, it counts here: crystals build up, some metals corrode, and none of it clears away unaided, no matter how long it sits.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before we go, our technicians start the engine and check that it is running correctly.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## About Killead itself

Killead is a small locality in County Antrim, situated inland at an elevation of 77 metres, approximately 11 miles northwest of Belfast. ## Killead and County Antrim: AdBlue drains across the area

Killead is a small village, and our vans that cover it also work the places around it, Aldergrove and Crumlin among them, across the BT postcode area.

Quickest of all: give a BT29 4 postcode to our van.

The vehicle stays where it is.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to the green space at the edge of the village, a side street close to a street just off the centre: our engineers drain the vehicle where it sits.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of the far end of the built-up part.

## Killead people: the short version

Always, the cap; after that, the tip.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere across County Antrim, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway — and so leave the car off and ring 0333 366 0103.
