# Kilmaurs: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

In Kilmaurs, finding it before your engine turns normally leaves draining and a full flush on the spot.

The rest of this page covers why it happens and how to make sure it does not — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to the motor — but plenty of current diesels driven around Kilmaurs and Onthank carry a second liquid too.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there spraying cleans the gas.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Many of motors have a single flap for both, while others move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at every forecourt visit, again and again.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Kilmaurs: how it happens

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

On a driveway off Irvine Road before work, or in the car park at Weston Tavern on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and once it is gone, limp mode follows.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's a second thing: an unfamiliar car.

No part stops the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It takes seconds, be it in Kirktoun or bang in the centre of Kilmaurs.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Kilmaurs forecourt or a drive out in Altonhill, take a few seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many vehicles carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at the nearest station.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

On the day the warning comes on — anywhere you are in East Ayrshire — a simple routine to follow.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, engine off, and not rushed by Cross at the roadside.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap, then look once more — confirm the diesel filler stayed closed the whole time. Only then, start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Kilmaurs: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief list, then. First: the motor stays off.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment the ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, just where fuel is taken from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the BP or the Morrisons, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

If you're on your own drive around Kilmaurs, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Already run? Pull over once it is safe, then turn off.

Come off the M77 — under 5 miles out of Kilmaurs — at the next junction.

A short hop across Kilmaurs is a smaller job than a run towards Glasgow, under 25 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## What occurs when our engineers turn up in Kilmaurs

Outside the local primary school, close to Mercat Cross or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

We ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run, because the answers determine this work and the quote.

During the call itself, you hear the quote — before dispatch.

Then your tank is emptied and the fuel system purged thoroughly.

More than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and nothing clears away unaided, however long it sits.

The filter flushed or, where it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; then a test of the vehicle.

Your engine is started next and tested to confirm it runs properly, all before our technicians go.

If your engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains around Kilmaurs and across East Ayrshire

Over KA postcodes, our teams that cover Kilmaurs — a village — work the surrounding spots too, Knockinlaw and Knockentiber among them.

Give a postcode that starts KA3 2, and the van gets there quickest.

Moving the vehicle is not necessary.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Morton Park, a side street near Kilmaurs Community Centre: our technicians drain the car where it sits.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Maxwell Church, ring and ask instead of guessing.

## For Kilmaurs motorists, the short version
