# Kingsbridge: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Keep your motor and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Caught before your engine runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Kingsbridge.

The remainder of this page covers why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Plenty of newer diesels around Southville, like those in Kingsbridge, run on two liquids; the motor gets only your diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Kingsbridge?

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Mill Street before work, or in the car park at The Quay on the way home.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — since a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once begun, keeps on.

Whether it happens in Dodbrooke or the middle of Kingsbridge, it is the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in West Alvington or a forecourt in Kingsbridge.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- Lift the flap and check for a label — many cars show what belongs in which inlet right there.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Ivybridge? Check with whoever drove it last before you set off, rather than once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — anywhere it is around Devon — a routine to use.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, engine off, and not in a rush beside The Anchor Centre at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start your car, close the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap never came off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Kingsbridge: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting the engine.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Asda Express or the Texaco, ask the attendants to help push your car clear of the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Kingsbridge.

When the motor has run by now, stop somewhere safe then switch it off.

The next exit is where to come off if you are on the M5, under 50 miles from Kingsbridge.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Kingsbridge is less work than a trip of under 25 miles towards Plymouth, so tell us.

## When our technicians get there in Kingsbridge, what occurs?

By Kingsbridge Primary School, near Kingsbridge Evangelical Church or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

The answers decide this work and our quote, so we ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

The price comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Then the tank is drained and your system rinsed thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes out unaided. That is why it counts more.

After your filter is cleaned — or renewed, where needed — clean diesel is added, and then your car gets tested.

Then our engineers start it and make sure it runs smoothly before leaving.

Unstarted cars usually mean a half-hour visit after arrival. The equipment is safe on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.

Moving the vehicle isn't necessary.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to Kingsbridge Family Church, a lay-by on the way to Duncombe Park, a drive.
