# Kingsditch: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your engine has not turned, it's emptied and fully rinsed where the car is around Kingsditch.

Not happened yet? Below, the page covers the reasons it takes place and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Not one fluid but two: that's how many newer diesels near Kingsditch and Swindon carry, with diesel feeding your motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

Each tank has a filler of its own.

Some vehicles put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place both together behind one flap.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Kingsditch: how it occurs

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things coming up at once.

Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Upperfield Road, or on the way home in the car park outside Cross Hands.

New-to-you cars are next, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, carries on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Kingsditch or out in St Peters.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Kingsditch forecourt or a drive over in Marle Hill, take a few seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Look for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver knows. Ask when you collect a rental or fleet car — from Cheltenham Spa's car park, say — rather than once the warning appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Gloucestershire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Kingsville Road, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.

- Both under a single flap? Then make sure the cap on the diesel filler is still shut before raising the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Stage five stays off limits.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Kingsditch already?

Brief order, then. Top of it: your motor stays off.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

The staff at Shell, EG On the Move or another forecourt will normally lend a hand to push the car clear when asked.

Your own driveway in Kingsditch is where it should stay.

Already run? Stop when it is safe, then turn off.

On the M5, under 3 miles from Kingsditch, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Kingsditch is a smaller job than a run towards Gloucester, under 10 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Kingsditch: what happens when we turn up

We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Gardners Lane Primary School, near Boulders or on your own driveway.

What liquid got in, the amount, and if it ran: our engineers ask because those replies set both work and quote.

You get that quote by phone, before anybody heads out.

Then your tank is emptied and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before leaving, we start it and make sure that it's running properly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive, provided the engine hasn't run — and the pumps we use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

It's worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.
