# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Kingsdown? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your engine.

Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the fuel system pulls it in.

Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Kingsdown.

Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Kingsdown: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- So no one can switch your ignition on, pull your keys away.

- If you're at all close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, save the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Ring right where you are. Say a CT14 8 postcode or the nearest street name, and nobody has to search for you.

Don't do these:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll your vehicle: the engine remains off.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Adding extra diesel doesn't work: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.

- Leave the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance along St. James Road.

- Draining your tank yourself by the road isn't worth trying.

Rolling your vehicle away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Kingsdown forecourt you're on, the Esso or any other.

If you're on your own drive, leave the car exactly where it sits.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor.

From a separate tank it is fed directly to your exhaust, treating what your engine lets out.

A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after tipped in, will not. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the same spot the intake sucks from.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Mill Hill overnight and hasn't turned since. The liquid waits at the foot of that tank, untouched — but it will be first through if your engine runs, before any diesel at all.

After it's pulled in, the harm takes two forms.

It eats at certain metals found in fuel components, attacking any part it touches until it is removed completely. And once the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and settle in tiny passages.

If the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting till morning around Kingsdown leaves things worse. In the tank alone, waiting costs nothing.

Then there is the water: it brings no lubrication to the parts that need it most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more major than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on another forecourt nearby's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that's the whole fault.

Harm only comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and sitting in your tank, it causes nothing.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable liquid.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

Nor can it be watered down, since it separates again — and the following fill will not rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and trying your engine "to see", in the centre of Kingsdown or out in Lower Walmer, does more harm than almost any other slip.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere across Kent your car has stopped.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Kingsdown

It's not on purpose. Many vehicles have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and muddling them up is simple in poor light.

It mostly takes place outside the house, from a bottle grabbed on the journey home, rather than at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases.

Hurrying, outside Kingsdown and Ringwould Church of England Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent refills the vehicle.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Upper Street.

Otherwise, after dark by King's Head, the vehicle is refilled by someone using that flap for the first time.

It crops up the most in a rental, a new vehicle, a fleet car, or the spare car in a family with one of each fuel types — the vehicles people use the least.

Anywhere in Kent, Kingsdown as well, the mistake does not change, and neither does the first step: leave it switched off.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Kingsdown?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

Through your filter, through the pipework, and — given any running — into the injection pump and each injector: that is how far it has gone.

Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: any might appear, perhaps midway across Kingsdown or returning from Kingsdown Wood.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

Leave the M20, under 15 miles from Kingsdown, at the first junction and park somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That's why a hop across Kingsdown to park near St John's Kingsdown Village Hall and a drive of under 25 miles for Canterbury are very different jobs.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once your engine has been run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has come to a stop.

If it's caught soon, permanent damage is very unusual.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Kingsdown: what it takes

A road by St. John the Evangelist, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: wherever your vehicle has stopped around Kingsdown, our engineers travel to it.

The job depends on three replies, and we ask for before all else — which fluid went in, the quantity, and whether your engine has run.

Right there, the tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once.

A careful flush counts far more with AdBlue than with petrol, because residue will not clear out by itself.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

About half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs where the engine hasn't run.

The equipment is explosion-proof, so a busy forecourt is no issue, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that's the last step.

You set off as soon as our engineers have started it, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway around Kingsdown or in a space by Walmer.

Our engineers make sure it runs properly on new diesel before leaving.

No workshop is required at any point, with the entire job done then and there.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

## About Kingsdown

Kingsdown is a small village on the coast of Kent, situated near the towns of Deal and Walmer, with Ringwould and Upper Walmer as neighbouring settlements. Kingsdown sits at an elevation of 32 metres, overlooking the English Channel, and is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock. Kingsdown is located approximately 15 miles from Canterbury and 70 miles from London, making it a rural coastal community with a mix of local amenities and nearby city access.

## Kingsdown and Kent: AdBlue drains across the area

Over the CT postcode area, the vans answering AdBlue call-outs in Kingsdown reach much of Kent as well, Ringwould, Upper Walmer and Walmer among them.

Ring and check instead of guessing if you're close to a county line, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

A van that comes to you suits Kingsdown, a coastal village: you have no need to take the vehicle to us, since our engineers empty it on the spot, on a drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

## Kingsdown: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

No single price would be fair, because every job is different.

What changes the price is, first, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where the vehicle is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Walmer Aerodrome.

That's why each call from Kingsdown starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it has run.

With those replies, a range narrows to a single fixed figure.

Quoted on the call before the van sets out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, no deposit.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.

## Still beside the vehicle around Kingsdown?

Right now, the best thing to do with the car is to not touch it.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder, in Kingsdown or wherever within Kent, after you phone 0333 366 0103 saying it's AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and if it ran.
