# Kingussie: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your motor hasn't turned, it is emptied and fully purged where your car is around Kingussie.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it occurs and the how to prevent it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Many current diesels on the roads round Kingussie and Balavil carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

It's in that gap that the mistake happens.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen around Kingussie?

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off High Street before work, or in the car park at Star Hotel on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is the second factor: a strange car.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once begun, carries on.

Ruthven or the middle of Kingussie: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Inveruglass or a forecourt around Kingussie.

- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Lift the flap and check for a label — many motors mark what goes in which inlet right there.

- Can't see it beside your diesel filler? In that case check below the bonnet or inside the boot — the owner's manual says where.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — anywhere you are across Highland — a simple routine to use.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of King Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- Both behind a single flap? So make sure the cap on your diesel filler is still closed before lifting the bottle.

- Finish once your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour slowly using the own spout.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Do not go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Kingussie?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting the engine.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

On a forecourt — Esso, another forecourt nearby or another — the staff will usually help roll the car away, if you ask.

On your own drive around Kingussie? Then the vehicle stays where it is.

Already started? Stop once it's sensible, then turn off.

Leave the M90 — over 50 miles out of Kingussie — at the first junction.

Mileage matters — a short hop across Kingussie is a smaller job than driving under 50 miles to Inverness — so say about how far it went.

## Kingussie: what happens when our engineers turn up

Outside the local primary school, near Old Bank Community Hub or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

What liquid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: we ask since the replies decide the work and price.

No one heads out before you have heard the price by phone.

The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, after your tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Testing comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and your filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

The engine is started next and checked to be sure it runs smoothly, all before we go.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor hasn't run take roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

## Kingussie and Highland: AdBlue drains across the area

As a riverside town, Kingussie shares its vans surrounding areas — Lynchat, Drumguish — all the way through PH postcodes and the wider area around them.

Quickest of all: give a PH21 1 postcode to the van.

There's no need to move the car.

Draining happens right there, whether a drive, a road near Talla Nan Ros, or a layby towards Kingussie Bowling Club.

If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Highland Fieldcraft Training Memorial Bench, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## For Kingussie people, the short version

Pour no AdBlue until you've read the cap.

Still AdBlue in your diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel will empty it wherever it is, wherever across Highland: keep the vehicle off and phone 0333 366 0103.
