# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Kinlochleven

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page aside for now, keep the ignition and motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if your motor hasn't run, it's drained and fully cleaned where your car sits around Kinlochleven.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Many newer diesels in Dalness, as well as Kinlochleven, carry on two liquids; your engine gets just your diesel.

The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh them, from its own tank.

Each tank has a filler of its own.

Many of motors have a single flap for both, while some put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled on each forecourt visit, again and again.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens around Kinlochleven

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Lismore Road before work, or in the car park at Bothy Bar heading home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and once it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — but a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's a second factor: a new vehicle.

Lastly, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as readily, and once the pour starts, nothing halts it.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Kinlochleven or out in Kinlochmore.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Ballachulish or a forecourt around Kinlochleven, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it beside the diesel filler? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Fort William, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

When the light comes on, anywhere around Highland, follow this routine.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, engine stopped, and not in a rush by Leven Road on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two share a flap, confirm it's shut before lifting the bottle.

- Finish once your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip gently through the own spout.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Kinlochleven already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition goes on — so leave it off.

Thinning it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the base rather than mixing — and that is where the fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — the nearest petrol station, another forecourt nearby or another — the attendants will normally help roll the vehicle away, if you ask.

At home around Kinlochleven? Then your car remains put.

Where your motor has run by now, pull over somewhere safe and turn the vehicle off.

Leave the M9 — over 50 miles out of Kinlochleven — at the next junction.

Mileage matters — a quick hop across Kinlochleven is a smaller job than heading over 50 miles to Stirling — so say about how far it went.

## When we get there in Kinlochleven, what takes place?

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside the local primary school, near Kinlochleven War Memorial or on your own driveway.

What fluid was put in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask since the answers decide the work and price.

On the call itself, you hear our price — ahead of dispatch.

Then the tank is cleared and the system flushed thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. Hence it counts more.

Once the filter has been flushed — or renewed, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and finally your car gets tested.

We don't go until it has been started and is running properly.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains about Kinlochleven, and Highland beyond

As a coastal village, Kinlochleven has the same vans as surrounding places — Caolasnacon, Glencoe — right across PH postcodes and the wider area around them.

Give a postcode beginning PH50 4, and our van gets there quickest.

The car stays put.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to The Leven Centre, a lay-by on the way to the green space at the edge of the village, a drive.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of The Good Sheperd.

## For Kinlochleven people, the short version
