# Kippen: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Engine off, ignition off: that is where you begin if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

The harm starts once it's pulled through the lines — it will not burn, and it will not combine with diesel.

If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully purged where the car stands around Kippen.

No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Kippen, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

Do:

- So no one can turn the ignition on, take your keys out.

- Near moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.

- Which product, and about what amount? Save the bottle or the receipt, and our technicians will see.

- Tell us a postcode starting FK8 3, or whatever street lies closest, and the van finds you straight — so call from wherever you stand.

Things not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift the vehicle: your motor remains off.

- Switching the key to ignition alone sets the pump running on many diesels. Avoid it.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't weaken it.

- Even a short distance along Main Street is too far to drive the car.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

Moving your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Kippen forecourt you are on, the the nearest petrol station included.

Stopped on your own driveway? Then it remains exactly where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, and there it cleans the fumes.

Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

Denser than diesel, it drops and collects below it — the very spot the pickup sucks from.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Arnprior overnight and has not been started since. The liquid sits at the base of that tank, undrawn — though it will be first through once the engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

It eats at some metals found in fuel systems, working on whatever it reaches until it is removed completely. And once the water goes, the urea forms crystals that block filters and settle in tiny passages.

Overnight, a vehicle sitting in Kippen with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it's just in the tank, it doesn't.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing through them, and so the water content harms them in its own right.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Thames and you have a problem of thin fuel.

It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it is inside the tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running your engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

Deposits and corrosion remain through the following tankful, and AdBlue separates back out of your diesel, so thinning it won't work. Hence the flush matters more, and turning your key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Murdieston or the centre of Kippen equally.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever around Stirling the car has stopped.

## Kippen: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not on purpose. Plenty of vehicles have the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark.

Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

Usually, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Rushing, outside the local primary school, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, someone refills the car.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Castlehill.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at Cross Keys, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

The least known cars see it most — rentals, new cars, company ones, and the spare motor in a family with one of each fuels.

Wherever around Stirling, Kippen included, the slip does not change, and neither does the first step: leave it off.

## Kippen: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank.

Via the fuel filter, along the pipework, and — with any running — on to the injection pump and each injector: that is how far it travels.

Expect lumpy running, smoke, falling power, lights on the dash, or a stall — returning from Bollochlinn Strip, say, or part way across Kippen.

Stop when safe. Turn off. Keep the vehicle off rather than restarting it to check.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M9, under 10 miles from Kippen, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Distance matters: every mile pushes the AdBlue further into your system, and so heading for Stirling, under 10 miles away, makes a far larger job than hopping across Kippen to the car park by New Water Supply Commemorative Fountain.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to rinse out once the engine has run, and our engineers do all of it where your car has stopped.

Long-term damage is very uncommon if it is spotted soon.

## Kippen: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

The car remains where it is, whether that's a street beside Kippen Parish Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt in Kippen, and our van comes to it.

Which fluid went in, about how much, plus if the motor has turned over: our technicians check before all else, since those shape the job.

On the spot, your tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one.

What remains from AdBlue won't flush out unaided, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters much more here than for petrol.

Testing the car follows at the end, once clean diesel goes in and the filter gets flushed or, if needed, replaced.

About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where your motor hasn't run.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Last, your system is primed with clean diesel.

At that point our engineers start the engine and you drive off, whether from a parking space outside Bridge of Allan or a drive around Kippen.

The check before our technicians head off is that it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

As the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

## About Kippen and where it is

Kippen is a small village in Stirling, situated inland at an elevation of 86 metres, approximately 9 miles from the city of Stirling. Kippen lies near several smaller settlements, including Cauldhame and Glentirranmuir, and is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock. Kippen is home to around 805 residents, who live in a rural setting with easy access to nearby Stirling.

## Kippen and Stirling: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue jobs in Kippen go to teams that serve the places around it — Cauldhame, Glentirranmuir plus Culmore — and most of Stirling beyond, throughout FK postcodes.

Assuming doesn't help close to a border or anywhere hard to describe; ring and ask.

A van that comes to you suits Kippen, a rural village: you have no need to take the car to us, because our engineers drain it on the spot, in a drive, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Kippen: the cost of fixing it

Not one flat price could be honest, since every job is different.

Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of your car, because an open drive is simpler for a technician to get to safely than a tight space behind War Memorial.

What went in, how much, plus if it ran: each Kippen call opens by asking exactly those, before a figure, never afterwards.

With those replies, a range shrinks to a single fixed figure.

Quoted on the call before the van sets out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## Alongside your car around Kippen, right now?

Right now, the most helpful thing to do with your car is to not touch it.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Kippen or anywhere around Stirling.
