# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Kirkland: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out right where your vehicle stands around Kirkland, is normally all it needs if caught before the motor runs.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

No single liquid but two: that is how many newer diesels near Kirkland and Innerleven carry, with diesel for the motor.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Other vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have the two together under one flap.

Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly.

Much less often, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

It's in the gap that the error lives.

## Kirkland: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Beech Avenue before work, or in the car park at The Douglas Arms on the way home.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is the second thing: a strange vehicle.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after begun, keeps on.

Whether it happens in Methil or the middle of Kirkland, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Kirkland forecourt or a driveway out in Pepper Hill, take a few seconds on these before any goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Cameron Bridge.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

When the light goes on, wherever across Fife, follow this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Mulberry Crescent.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.

- Both behind one flap? So make sure the cap on your diesel side stays closed ahead of raising the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and check once more — making sure your diesel cap remained closed throughout. Only then, start the car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Leave out step five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Kirkland?

Brief order, then. Top of that: your engine remains unstarted.

Leave your ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on alone runs your fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the BP or the Shell, ask the attendants to help roll the car clear of the petrol pump.

If you are on your own driveway around Kirkland, leave the car where it is.

Already started? Stop once it's sensible, then switch off.

On the M90, under 15 miles from Kirkland, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Kirkland is less work than a trip of under 25 miles to Edinburgh, and so say.

## When our engineers get there in Kirkland, what occurs?

Our van comes to your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, near St Agatha's Catholic Church, or by the local primary school.

Our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, because the replies determine this work and our price.

No one sets off until you've had our quote by phone.

Draining that tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Filter cleaned or, if it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; then a test of the vehicle.

We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor has not run need roughly half an hour after we arrive.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

Fastest of all: give a KY8 2 postcode for our van.

The vehicle remains put.

The drain happens on the spot, be it a drive, a street by Methilhill Parish Church, or a lay-by towards Methil Community Garden.

If you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of War Memorial, ring and ask instead of guessing.
