# Kirkton: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Stop reading a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Kirkton.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of current diesels on the roads around Kirkton and Livingston carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler on every tank.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled constantly.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## Kirkton: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Lister Road, perhaps at Livingston Inn on the way home after work.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Kirkton or out in Livingston Village.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Eliburn or a forecourt in Kirkton, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.

- On many motors, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it beside the diesel filler? Then check below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Livingston North? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in West Lothian that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Millfield.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — once you've located your filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap stays on. When the two share a flap, confirm it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## Kirkton: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief list, then. First: your engine remains unstarted.

Leave your ignition off as well, because on many diesels it by itself runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel will not weaken it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Morrisons Daily, Morrisons or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing your car clear if you ask.

If you're on your own driveway around Kirkton, leave it where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Kirkton lies under 3 miles from the M8; on it, use the first exit.

Mileage counts — a quick hop across Kirkton makes a smaller job than heading under 15 miles towards Dunfermline — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Kirkton: what happens when we get there

By the local primary school, near Almondvalley Heritage Centre or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

The replies determine the work and our price, and so our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

Nobody heads out before you've had our price over the phone.

Draining the tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of it clears out unaided, no matter how long it sits.

Once your filter is cleaned — or renewed, where required — clean diesel is added, and finally the car gets tested.

Before leaving, we fire it up and check that it's running smoothly.

If your motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
