# Kitwell: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Engine off, ignition off: that's how you begin if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

As it is water-based, it won't ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble only comes once the pump starts pulling it.

If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly flushed where the vehicle stands in Kitwell.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## Kitwell, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

To do:

- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.

- If you are at all close to moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- Which product, and roughly what volume? Hang on to the bottle or your receipt, and our engineers will know.

- Give us a postcode starting B32 4, or whichever street lies closest, and our van reaches you directly — so call wherever you stand.

Do not:

- Moving the vehicle just a short way is no reason to fire up your engine.

- Plenty of diesels power their pump the moment the ignition comes on, so keep the vehicle off.

- Pouring in extra diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.

- Don't drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch up Balmoral Road.

- Don't try to drain it yourself by the roadside.

On a forecourt in Kitwell, whether it's the BP or another one, ask the staff to help you push your car away from the petrol pump.

If you're on your own drive, leave it exactly where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor.

From a dedicated tank it is fed straight to the exhaust, cleaning what your engine emits.

Nothing in a fuel pump is designed for this fluid — and no part of it was meant to go that way.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays separate instead of mixing — quite unlike fuel.

It sinks, since it's denser than diesel, and pools down where the intake draws its fuel from.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Lower Illey overnight and has not been started since. The liquid sits at the foot of that tank, untouched — though it will be the first thing through if your motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

After it's sucked in, the harm takes two forms.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that crystallises in filter elements and narrow passages; and, because it eats at some metals, each part it touches suffers for as long as it remains in there.

Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it overnight in Kitwell makes things worse. Inside your tank only, waiting does nothing.

The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger fault?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Harvest Fuel Station's forecourt makes the fuel thin — that's the whole problem.

Blended into your diesel and sitting still, it's no threat at that stage; using the motor is the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It can't simply be run through, since it does not burn.

Whether your car is in Woodgate or the heart of Kitwell, turning it over "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other slip, and the flush matters more. Why: it will not remain mixed, and so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the next fill.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Anywhere around Worcestershire the car has stopped, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue yet in the reservoir: the simplest bit of any fuel system to empty.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Kitwell

Many cars place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and after dark the two may look the same. No one means it.

Mostly it is never the filling station: a driver picks up a container heading home and pours it in at home.

A couple of familiar ways cover the majority of them.

The refill is hurried outside Kitwell Primary School, after your dash lit up with a warning as the kids were taken in.

In the evening, a container goes in on a driveway close to Ravenhayes Lane.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills your car after dark, stopped in the car park by Balmoral.

The least familiar vehicles see it the most — hire cars, new ones, company ones, and the spare vehicle in a home with one of each fuel types.

Wherever across Worcestershire, Kitwell as well, the slip does not change, and nor does the first response: leave it off.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Kitwell?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

The filter and lines have had it sucked along, and some running takes it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Perhaps returning from Frankley Lower Beeches, or part way across Kitwell, your motor may go lumpy, smoke, lose power, light up your dash or cut out.

Stop when safe. Switch off. Keep the vehicle off rather than restarting it to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the Frankley Services Southbound, under a mile from Kitwell, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Kitwell to the car park by Talking about the Weather (Bartley Green Interchange) is a very different job from a run towards Birmingham, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever the car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once the engine has been run.

When it's caught quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

## Kitwell: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that's a road near Bartley Green War Memorial, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt around Kitwell, and our van comes to it.

Three replies shape the work, so first our engineers ask what was put in, roughly what quantity, plus if the motor has turned over.

Next, emptying the tank right there takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue in one go.

What remains from AdBlue won't flush out by itself, so the whole system gets a full flush, which counts much more with urea than for petrol.

After that, your filter: flushed, or changed when it has to be. Then clean diesel, and then a test of your car.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Bleeding your system with clean diesel comes at the end.

At that point we start it and you head off, whether from a parking bay at Northfield or a driveway around Kitwell.

Before we leave, our technicians make sure it's running correctly with clean diesel in.

Because the job is done in full where your car is, a workshop never comes into it.

Afterwards, you are given paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

## About Kitwell

Kitwell is a suburban area in the West Midlands, situated approximately 5.9 miles west of Birmingham city centre. Kitwell sits at an elevation of around 205 metres, overlooking the surrounding countryside. Kitwell is characterised by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, with nearby places including Illey, Frankley Green, and Frankley. Kitwell is a relatively small community, with a population of around 2078 residents.

## AdBlue drains across Worcestershire, Kitwell included

Illey, Frankley Green and Frankley are among the towns near Kitwell that the same teams serve, together with most of Worcestershire beyond, over the B postcode area.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're close to a border, or somewhere tricky to explain.

Wherever the car sits — a drive at home, a residential street, a car park, a filling station — our technicians drain it there, with no need to take it to us; which suits Kitwell, a residential suburb, well.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Kitwell?

Each job is different, and so no fixed quote would be fair.

Three things shift the cost: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight space behind St Michael and All Angels.

For that reason, every enquiry from Kitwell begins by asking the identical trio — which fluid was put in, what quantity, if the engine ran — ahead of any figure.

With those replies, the range shrinks to one firm figure.

Priced by phone before the engineer heads out, the job is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit.

Look at your policy whilst we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.

## Next to your car around Kitwell, right now?

Then the most useful thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us it's AdBlue, about how much, and if it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Kitwell or anywhere across Worcestershire.
