# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Klondyke? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave your motor off then keep the ignition off.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Being water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage just starts once your pump starts drawing it.

Caught before your motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Klondyke.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Klondyke: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- Pocket your keys, which prevents anyone turning the power on.

- Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and about what quantity, save the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call right where you are. Quote a NE23 6 postcode or the closest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Do not do these:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll your car: the motor remains off.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Keep the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way along Lanercost Park.

- Emptying your tank on your own beside the road isn't one to try.

On a forecourt in Klondyke, whether it is the Sainsbury's or another one, ask the staff to help you roll the car clear of the petrol pump.

If you are on your own drive, leave it precisely where it sits.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

From a separate tank it goes directly to your exhaust, cleaning what the motor lets out.

A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

The pickup sucks fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue settles: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks.

A car topped up on a drive in Collingwood Chase overnight and not started since counts as the simple case. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but once the engine runs, that is what goes first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that hardens in filters and narrow channels; meanwhile, because it attacks certain metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains inside.

By daybreak, a car parked in Klondyke with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it is only inside your tank, nothing changes.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel running past them, so the water content harms them by itself.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Co-op Food's forecourt makes the fuel watery — that is the whole issue.

Mixed into the diesel and left still, it is no threat for now; using the motor is the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is simply the wrong one.

It can't just be run through, because it does not burn.

Whether your car is in East Cramlington or the heart of Klondyke, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other error, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it won't stay blended, and so watering it down is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next tankful.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Never started? Then the AdBlue sits just in the tank, the easiest section of the whole system to empty, wherever your car has come to rest across Northumberland.

## Klondyke: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, now and then behind one flap — may look the same. No one means it; many designs invite it.

It mostly happens at home, from a container grabbed on the journey home, rather than at the filling station.

Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Ss Peter and Paul's Catholic Primary Academy the top-up is rushed.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Rowan Grove.

Otherwise, after dark outside Shankhouse Sports & Social Club, the car gets refilled by someone opening that flap for the first time.

Hired vehicles, brand-new vehicles, fleet motors, or the spare vehicle in a family with one of each: the least familiar vehicles get it the most.

An identical slip, same first response — leave it off — anywhere you happen to be around Klondyke or the remainder of Northumberland.

## Klondyke: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

With any running time, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, having passed via your filter and lines.

Perhaps returning from Lanercost Nature Area, or midway across Klondyke, the engine may run lumpy, smoke, drop power, light up the dash or cut out.

No starting it again to test: pull over once it is safe, then switch everything off.

Each start pulls more of that through.

On the A167(M), under 10 miles from Klondyke, the next junction is where to leave, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Distance counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into your system, and so heading towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 10 miles away, gives a far larger job than crossing Klondyke to the car park by Footsteps in the Snow (Wildspace Network).

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There's more to flush once the engine has run, and our technicians do all of it where the car has ended up.

Long-term damage is very uncommon if it's spotted early.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Klondyke?

The car stays where it is, whether that is a road near Mayfield Community Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station around Klondyke, and our van travels to it.

Before anything else we ask what got in, about how much, and if the engine has run, because those answers decide this work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one when that tank is drained, right there.

Residue from AdBlue won't wash out by itself, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than for petrol.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Engine not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

The last step is to bleed the system on fresh diesel.

Whether it is a parking bay by Seaton Delaval or a driveway around Klondyke, that is where we start it and you drive off.

Our engineers confirm it runs correctly on new diesel before leaving.

The whole job is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a garage.

Afterwards, you are given paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

## About Klondyke, for a moment

Klondyke is a suburban area in Northumberland, situated approximately 7 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne, and is characterised by its semi-detached housing stock. Klondyke sits inland, at an elevation of around 53 metres, and is located near other residential areas such as High Pit and Collingwood. Klondyke is part of the wider Newcastle upon Tyne urban area, with the city centre being a short distance away. Klondyke has a population of around 2696 residents.

## AdBlue drains across Northumberland, Klondyke included

AdBlue call-outs in Klondyke are passed to teams that serve the towns around it — High Pit, Collingwood as well as Mayfield Grange — and much of Northumberland beyond, throughout NE postcodes.

Close to a border, or somewhere awkward to pin down? Checking beats guessing, and so phone.

Klondyke is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it is, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Klondyke?

Because each jobs vary, a flat figure would not be fair.

The price shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it depends on where the vehicle is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Cramlington Bowling Club.

For that reason, each enquiry from Klondyke opens by asking the identical trio — what went in, how much, if it ran — before any figure.

When they are known, a range becomes a single fixed number.

The price is given during the call, before anyone sets off; payment comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Look at your insurance whilst we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.

## Alongside your car in Klondyke, right now?

In that case, do nothing — that is the best step there is.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel handles the rest, across Klondyke or wherever in Northumberland, once you call 0333 366 0103 to say it's AdBlue, about how big an amount, and whether it ran.
