# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Knave-in-hole? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your motor.

Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is.

The harm starts once it is pulled through your pump — it won't ignite, and it won't blend with diesel.

If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and carefully cleaned where the car sits in Knave-in-hole.

Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps straight away, Knave-in-hole: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Things to do:

- Pocket your keys, and that stops anyone switching the power on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call right where you are. Say a GL6 9 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Don't do these:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift the vehicle: the motor remains off.

- Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run your pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short stretch along Besbury Lane.

- Do not try to drain it yourself at the kerbside.

Moving the vehicle off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Knave-in-hole forecourt you're on, the Murco included.

Parked on your own driveway? Then it stays just as it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to clean the gases.

Nothing in an injection pump is made for this fluid — and no part of it was intended to go through one.

Tipped in with the diesel, it keeps apart rather than blending — quite different from fuel.

Denser than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the same place the intake sucks from.

A motor filled on a drive in Burnt Ash overnight and left unstarted counts as the simple case. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but once your engine runs, that's what goes first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the parts it gets to for as long as it stays there.

Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting till morning around Knave-in-hole makes things worse. In your tank only, time does nothing.

And there is the water: it brings no lubrication to the parts that rely on it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Shell and you have an issue of thin fuel.

Harm only comes from driving on it. Mixed into your diesel and sitting in your tank, it causes none.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether.

It cannot just be run through, since it does not burn.

Whether your car sits in Brimscombe or the heart of Knave-in-hole, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other slip, and the flush counts more. Why: it will not remain mixed, so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion outlast the next fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

Clearing a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever around Gloucestershire your car has stopped.

## Knave-in-hole: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and after dark the two can look identical. Nobody means it.

It usually happens at home, from a container bought en route home, not at the filling station.

A few familiar ways cover most cases.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Brimscombe Church of England (VA) Primary School the top-up is hurried.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Knapp Lane.

Or a driver new to that flap refills the car after dark, stopped in the car park outside Ragged Cot.

Rented motors, new vehicles, company motors, or the second car in a family with both fuels: the least known vehicles get it the most.

Wherever you are in Knave-in-hole or the rest of Gloucestershire, it's the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Knave-in-hole: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank.

Your filter and lines have had it pulled along, and any running time takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Watch for lumpy running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on the dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Stewart Playing Field, say, or part way across Knave-in-hole.

No starting it again to test: pull over when safe, then switch it off.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M5, under 10 miles from Knave-in-hole, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not driving on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into the system. That's why crossing Knave-in-hole to park beside Holy Trinity and a drive of under 15 miles towards Gloucester are such separate jobs.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once your engine has run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where your car has ended up.

Very seldom does it leave lasting damage if it is noticed soon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Knave-in-hole?

Wherever it has come to rest in Knave-in-hole — a filling station, a layby, a driveway, a street by Minchinhampton Youth and Community Centre — the van comes to the vehicle.

Three answers shape the job, so before anything else our technicians ask what got in, about the amount, plus whether your engine has turned over.

Next, draining the tank on the spot takes out the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue together.

Your system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Fresh diesel goes in after the filter is flushed — or swapped, when it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested.

Not run? Then expect about half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Clean diesel goes in to prime your system, and that's the last step.

At that point our technicians fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking space by Stroud or a drive in Knave-in-hole.

It is checked on clean diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before we leave.

No workshop is required at any point, with the whole job done then and there.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

Close to a boundary, or somewhere awkward to explain? Asking beats guessing, so phone.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Knave-in-hole

There is no honest single quote, since the jobs are not the same.

What changes the cost is, first of all, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and finally where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Minchinhampton Community Library.

Which fluid got in, how much, plus whether the engine ran: each Knave-in-hole enquiry opens by asking precisely that, ahead of a figure, not after.

Those replies shrink the range right down to one number.

Our price is given on the call, before a van sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

Check your policy whilst we're on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.

## Knave-in-hole: still next to your car?

Leaving the vehicle alone is, then, the most useful thing open to you.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Say it's AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and whether the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel handles it, in Knave-in-hole or anywhere within Gloucestershire.
