# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Knocklaw

Engine off, ignition off: that's where you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system draws it in.

In Knocklaw, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before the engine runs usually comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where the vehicle is.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## What to do right now, Knocklaw: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do these:

- Keys out — then nobody can switch anything on.

- Near moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and about how much, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting NE65 7, or the name of the nearest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Never do these:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift your vehicle: your motor stays off.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Leave the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance down Knocklaw Park.

- Emptying the tank on your own by the road is not worth trying.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you roll your car off the island if you're at a forecourt in Knocklaw, whether it's the Shell or somewhere else.

On that drive, the vehicle remains just as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the engine.

From a dedicated reservoir it goes directly to the exhaust, cleaning what your motor emits.

A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

It doesn't combine. After it is poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like diesel.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

A vehicle filled on a driveway in Thropton overnight and not started since is the straightforward one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though once your engine runs, that's what goes first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filters and tiny channels; meanwhile, because it eats at certain metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains in there.

Pipes holding AdBlue mean damage overnight for a car sitting in Knocklaw. Just inside the tank, it stays the same.

Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, and that is a separate kind of damage.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake at the another forecourt nearby, and the problem is diluted fuel.

It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's inside the tank it causes no harm; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is plainly the wrong one.

It doesn't burn, and so it can't simply be run through.

Nor can it be thinned, because it splits back out — and the next fill will not rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the centre of Knocklaw or out in Cartington, does more harm than almost any other mistake.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Northumberland the car is sitting.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Knocklaw

Plenty of motors place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and in dim light the two can look the same. No one means it.

It usually takes place at home, from a bottle bought en route home, not at the filling station.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Rothbury First School the top-up is rushed.

Someone pours the container in outside their house, just off B6341, as the day ends.

Another pattern: darkness, a pub car park by Queens Head Hotel, and someone using that flap for the first time.

The least known vehicles see it the most — hire cars, brand-new ones, fleet cars, and the other vehicle in a family with both fuel types.

Same slip, same first step — leave it switched off — wherever you happen to be in Knocklaw or the rest of Northumberland.

## Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Knocklaw?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

It has been sucked through the filter and the lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

Expect rough running, smoke, lost power, lights on the dash, or a cut-out — returning from Rothbury Golf Club, say, or midway across Knocklaw.

Once safe, stop then switch everything off — without turning it on again to test.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the A167(M), under 50 miles from Knocklaw, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

A quick hop across Knocklaw to the car park by Burnfoot Power House is one matter; heading towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 50 miles away, is another, since each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage matters.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where the car has ended up, and once the motor has run there is more of it.

Long-term damage is very uncommon when it's caught soon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Knocklaw?

Wherever it has come to rest around Knocklaw — a filling station, a layby, a drive, a road beside Rothbury Pool and Gym — the van travels to your vehicle.

Three replies shape the job, and so first our technicians ask which fluid was put in, roughly what quantity, plus whether the motor has turned over.

On the spot, the tank is then emptied, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once.

What remains from AdBlue won't wash away by itself, so the whole system gets a careful flush, which matters much more with urea than for petrol.

After that, your filter: flushed, or replaced if it has to be. After that fresh diesel, then a check of the car.

If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no problem, and it's hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime the system, and that's the last step.

At that point we fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking bay outside Acklington or a drive in Knocklaw.

It is checked on new diesel to confirm it runs smoothly before our engineers go.

No garage is required at any point, with the whole job done on the spot.

Afterwards, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

## AdBlue drains across Northumberland, Knocklaw included

Over the NE postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue call-outs around Knocklaw serve much of Northumberland too, Rothbury, Whitton and Newtown included.

Phone and check instead of guessing when you're by a border, or anywhere tricky to explain.

Anywhere the vehicle sits — your driveway at home, a residential street, a parking area, a filling station — we drain it there, with no need to bring it to us; that suits Knocklaw, a residential suburb, well.

## Knocklaw: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job is different, and so not one fixed price would be honest.

The price shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Jubilee Hall.

With that reason, every call from Knocklaw begins with the identical trio — which fluid got in, how much, if it ran — ahead of any quote.

With them, the range narrows to one fixed number.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Check your insurance whilst we're on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

## In Knocklaw and still next to the vehicle?

Then the most useful thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, plus whether the engine ran is everything our technicians ask. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder across Northumberland, Knocklaw included.
