# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Knowle Park: How It Happens and How to Stop It

Pause reading a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out right where the vehicle stands in Knowle Park, is usually what it needs if found before your engine runs.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Many modern diesels around Upper Knowle, as well as Knowle Park, carry on two liquids; your motor gets just your diesel.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on many motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Knowle Park: how it takes place

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Queenshill Road before work, or in the car park outside The George on the way home.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old motor — because a rental car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once started, keeps on.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Knowle Park or out in Knowle.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Lower Knowle or a forecourt around Knowle Park.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it is when the filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Bedminster.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

For the day the warning appears — anywhere you are in Bristol — a simple routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Melbury Road, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off first.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you've found your filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Finish once your tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour slowly through the own spout.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Skip stage five altogether.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Knowle Park?

Brief list, then. First: your engine stays off.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the base instead of blending — and that's where your fuel is sucked from.

The attendants at Tesco, Shell or any forecourt will usually help pushing the vehicle clear if you ask.

Your own driveway in Knowle Park is the place it stays.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M32, under 3 miles from Knowle Park, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Knowle Park is a smaller job than a run towards Bristol, under 3 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our engineers turn up around Knowle Park, what occurs?

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Knowle Park Primary School, near Redcatch Community Church or on your own drive.

What fluid got in, the amount, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since those answers decide the work and price.

The quote is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol.

The filter flushed or, where it must be, swapped; fresh diesel in; then a check of the vehicle.

After that we start the engine and check it runs smoothly before leaving.

If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.
