# Knowle Top: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Keep your motor and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before the motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Knowle Top.

Reading in advance? In that case what follows explains how it comes about and what to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds your engine — yet many current diesels seen round Knowle Top and Stannington hold a second fluid too.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Plenty of vehicles have a single flap for both, while some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

Far less frequently, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

It's in that gap that the slip lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Knowle Top

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

On a driveway off Stannington Road before work, or in the car park outside The Peacock Inn heading home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle tells you, and once it is gone, limp mode follows.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — because a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Park Side or the middle of Knowle Top: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Town End or a forecourt around Knowle Top.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives when your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver knows. Check when you collect a hire car or fleet car — from Sheffield's car park, say — not when the warning comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere around South Yorkshire, use this routine.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, motor off, and not in a rush by Knowle Close on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. When the two sit under a flap, confirm it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Finish when that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour slowly through the own spout.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Find during the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Skip stage five entirely.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Knowle Top?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment the ignition is switched on — and so keep it off.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — JET, Esso or another — the attendants will usually help push the vehicle away, if you ask.

Your own driveway in Knowle Top is the place it stays.

Where the motor has run by now, stop safely then switch the car off.

On the M1, under 10 miles from Knowle Top, that means the next exit.

Mileage matters — a short hop across Knowle Top makes a smaller job than driving under 5 miles towards Sheffield — so say about how far it went.

## Knowle Top: what occurs when our engineers get there

Our van reaches the vehicle wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside Stannington Library, or outside Stannington Infant School.

Which fluid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: we ask since those answers decide both work and price.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody heads out.

Draining that tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Testing is last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or changed as needed.

Then our engineers start the car and check it runs smoothly before leaving.

With pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor hasn't run take about half an hour once our engineers are there.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
