# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Knuzden Brook? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep your engine off then keep your ignition off.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

The trouble begins once it's sucked through the pump — it won't ignite, and it will not combine with diesel.

Caught before the engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Knuzden Brook.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Knuzden Brook: the first few minutes

Do:

- Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.

- Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.

- Ring just where you are. Say a BB1 2 postcode or the nearest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

- Don't start your engine, even for a moment to shift the car.

- The ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to run your fuel pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Leave the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance along Windsor Road.

- No draining it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

Ask the attendants to help you move your car away from the island if you're at a forecourt around Knuzden Brook, whether it is the BP or elsewhere.

At your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not the motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's sprayed into the exhaust, where it cleans the gas.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays separate rather than mixing — entirely different from fuel.

It sinks, since it's heavier than diesel, and settles down where the intake takes its supply from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Stanhill last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

It causes two kinds of damage from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filters and narrow channels; and, because it attacks certain metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains inside.

By daybreak, a vehicle sitting around Knuzden Brook with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it is just in that tank, nothing changes.

The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger issue?

Petrol put into a diesel on Texaco's forecourt makes the fuel thin — that is the main problem.

No harm is done as long as it sits put, blended into the diesel — only when the engine works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It can't simply be run through, because it doesn't burn.

Nor can it be thinned, because it splits back out — and the next fill won't clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more here, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Knuzden Brook or out in Whitebirk, costs more than nearly any other error.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Emptying a tank is the simplest part on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere in Lancashire your car has stopped.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Knuzden Brook: how it ends up there

It is not on purpose. Plenty of vehicles have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and muddling them up is simple after dark.

Mostly it is never the forecourt: someone buys a bottle driving home and pours it in at home.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways.

Rushing, outside Knuzden St Oswald's Church of England Primary Academy, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone refills the car.

Close to Stanhill Lane, someone tips a container in at home after work.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at The Knuzden Tap, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It crops up the most in a hire car, a brand-new car, a company car, or the other car of a home with one of each fuel types — the cars people use the least.

Same mistake, an identical first response — leave it off — wherever you are in Knuzden Brook or the rest of Lancashire.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Knuzden Brook?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

Your filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and any running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Watch for rough running, exhaust smoke, falling power, warnings on the dash, or a stall — coming back from Queen's Park, perhaps, or midway across Knuzden Brook.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M65, under a mile from Knuzden Brook, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Knuzden Brook to the car park by St Oswald is a very different job from a run towards Preston, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once the motor has been running.

Caught quickly, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Knuzden Brook: what it takes

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Knuzden Brook: a side street close to St Thomas with St Jude, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Which fluid went in, about how much, and whether the engine has been run: we ask first, since those decide the job.

On the spot, the tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush counts: the whole system is flushed right through since residue won't wash away by itself.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs where your motor has not run.

The equipment is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no fault, and it is hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Bleeding the fuel system with fresh diesel comes last.

Starting it comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, by Rishton or on a driveway in Knuzden Brook.

It is checked on new diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before our engineers head off.

Because the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a garage never comes into it.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers want.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Knuzden Brook?

There is no honest single price, since the jobs aren't the same.

Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of your car, since an open drive is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight spot behind All Saints.

Ahead of any quote, never after, each enquiry from Knuzden Brook begins with three checks: the fuel, the quantity, and if the engine ran.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
