# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lache

Keep your motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Around Lache, catching it before the motor turns usually means draining and a thorough flush on the spot.

Reading before the event? In that case the rest covers how it happens and how to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Many newer diesels in Handbridge, like those in Lache, run on two liquids; your engine takes only the diesel.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there spraying treats the gas.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Plenty of cars share a single flap for both, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

Much less often, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

It's in that gap that the slip happens.

## Lache: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Lache Lane before work, or in the car park outside The Brewery Arms on the way home.

Unfamiliar motors are second, as well. Hire cars, new motors and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as readily, and after the tip begins, no part halts it.

Westminster Park or the middle of Lache: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Roughhill or a forecourt around Lache.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- On plenty of cars, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.

- Can't find it next to your diesel inlet? In that case look below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook says where.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Chester? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

For the day the warning comes on — wherever you are around Cheshire — a routine to follow.

- Switch off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and not rushed beside Snowdon Crescent at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- Both behind one flap? Then make sure the cap on the diesel side stays shut before raising the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and check once more — making sure the diesel filler stayed shut the whole time. After that, start the car.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Lache: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on.

Topping up with diesel won't dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of your tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the BP, ask the staff to help roll the car away from the pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Lache.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

Leave the M53 — under 5 miles out of Lache — at the first junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Lache is less a job than a trip of under 3 miles towards Chester, and so say.

## Our arrival in Lache, and what happens next

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Lache Primary School, close to St Clare's Church or on your own driveway.

Our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it has run, since the replies settle the work and our price.

The quote is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Emptying the tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Once the fuel filter has been cleaned — or renewed, where needed — fresh diesel is added, and then the vehicle gets tested.

We don't leave until it has been started and is running smoothly.

If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains across Cheshire, Lache included

Saltney and Curzon Park are among the places around Lache, a residential suburb, that the same vans cover, over CH postcodes.

Quote a postcode that starts CH4 7, and the van gets there quickest.

Your car stays put.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Westminster Park Municipal Golf Course, a side street near Glan Aber Tennis Club: our technicians drain the vehicle where it is.

Assuming doesn't help behind St. Mark's Parish Church Saltney, close to a border, or anywhere hard to describe; ring and check.

## Lache drivers: the short version

Read the cap before you pour.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere in Cheshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless — and so leave the car off and call 0333 366 0103.
