# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lady Balk: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page aside for now, leave your ignition and engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, done right where your vehicle stands in Lady Balk, is usually all it takes when found before your motor runs.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Not one fluid but two: that is what plenty of modern diesels around Lady Balk and Harewood Park run, with diesel for the motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

Plenty of cars have a single flap for the two, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

Far less frequently, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen in Lady Balk?

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off New Hall Road, or heading home in the car park outside The Ladybalk.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as easily, and after the pour begins, nothing stops it.

It takes a few seconds, be it in New Town or right in the heart of Lady Balk.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Lady Balk forecourt or a driveway out in Marl Pits, take a few seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- On many cars, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Pontefract Monkhill? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere across West Yorkshire, follow this routine.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and not in a rush beside Monkhill Lane at the roadside.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — after you've located the filler and read it.

- The two behind one flap? So make sure the cap on the diesel filler is still shut ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Leave out step five entirely.

## Lady Balk: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Short order, then. Top of that: your engine stays unstarted.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

The attendants at Total, Shell or any forecourt will normally lend a hand to push the car away if asked.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Lady Balk.

Already run? Stop when it is sensible, then turn off.

Lady Balk sits under a mile from the M62; on it, use the next junction.

A short hop across Lady Balk is a smaller job than a run towards Wakefield, under 10 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## Lady Balk: what happens when we turn up

Outside Orchard Head Junior and Infant and Nursery School, close to Wooden Faces or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our technicians come to it.

What liquid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask because those answers decide both work and price.

That price comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

Then that tank is drained and the system purged thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

A test is last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or changed as needed.

We don't go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Unstarted cars mostly need a half-hour job from arrival. The equipment is safe on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.

## Lady Balk and West Yorkshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Over WF postcodes, the vans that cover Lady Balk — a residential suburb — work the surrounding places too, Pontefract and Monkhill included.

Give a postcode beginning WF8 1, and the van arrives fastest.

The car does not need to shift.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to St John's Priory, a lay-by on the way to Ladybalk Playing Fields, a drive.

If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Swillington Tower, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## Lady Balk drivers: the short version

Tip no AdBlue until you have read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere in West Yorkshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same — so leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103.
