# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Lady Wood: Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

Stop here a minute if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out just where the car sits around Lady Wood, is usually what it takes if caught before the engine runs.

The remainder of this page explains why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

No single liquid but two: that is what many modern diesels near Lady Wood and Gledhow run, with diesel for the engine.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where spraying treats the fumes.

There is a filler on each tank.

Other motors put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place the two side by side behind one flap.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually comes from a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think which filler it needs.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Lady Wood?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a driveway off North Lane before work, or in the car park outside White House on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car warns you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — because a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after begun, carries on.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Lady Wood or out in Roundhay.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Park Villas or a forecourt in Lady Wood.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says which it lives if your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver will know. Check when you collect a rental or company car — from Cross Gates's car park, say — not when the warning comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever across West Yorkshire, follow this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Tudor Lawns.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It seems silly. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Before you start the car, shut the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Find during the second or third step that the bottle went into the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Do not go on to step five.

## Lady Wood: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

Leave the ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on by itself starts the pump.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the bottom rather than mixing — and that is where the fuel is sucked from.

The staff at BP, ASDA Fuel or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing your car away if you ask.

If you're on your own driveway around Lady Wood, leave the car where it sits.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the Inner Ring Road, under 3 miles from Lady Wood, that means the next junction.

Mileage matters — a short hop across Lady Wood makes a smaller job than heading under 3 miles towards Leeds — so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival around Lady Wood, and what happens next

Our van reaches the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside Oakwood Church, or outside Roundhay St John's Church of England Primary School.

We ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, because those replies settle the work and the quote.

That quote is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Then the tank is cleared and your system cleaned thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

Once your filter has been cleaned — or renewed, where required — fresh diesel goes in, and finally your car is tested.

Next our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly before we go.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive, provided the motor has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
