# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ladyburn? Don't Start It

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep the engine off — and the ignition too.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue.

The harm starts once it's pulled through the pump — it won't burn, and it will not blend with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Ladyburn, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before the motor has run.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Ladyburn: the first few minutes

Do:

- Pocket your keys, which prevents someone switching the electrics on.

- Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.

- Which product, and about how much volume? Hang on to the bottle or your receipt, and our technicians will know.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting PA15 2, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- No starting the motor — not briefly, not to reposition the car.

- Many diesels power their pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so keep the car off.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not thin it.

- Keep it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance along Lady Burn Street.

- Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself by the kerbside.

Moving the car away from the island is a job for staff to help with, whichever Ladyburn forecourt you're on, the Morrisons included.

On that drive, your car stays just as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to clean the gases.

A fuel pump is not designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays separate rather than mixing — entirely unlike fuel.

It drops, because it's denser than diesel, and pools low where the intake takes its supply from.

A motor filled on a drive in Bogston yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the simple case. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but once the engine turns, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

Once it's sucked in, the harm comes in two forms.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there.

By daybreak, a car sitting around Ladyburn with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; if it is only inside your tank, nothing changes.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel running through them, and so the water content damages them in its own right.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the BP and you have a problem of thin fuel.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it is inside that tank it causes no harm; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is plainly the wrong one.

Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

It does not stay mixed, and so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Maukinhill or the middle of Ladyburn.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Anywhere across Inverclyde the vehicle has come to rest, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the easiest part of a fuel system to clear.

## Ladyburn: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Many vehicles put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, occasionally under one flap, and in dim light the two may appear the same. Nobody intends it.

It mostly takes place outside the house, from a container bought en route home, not at the filling station.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the top-up is rushed.

After work, a bottle is tipped in on a driveway close to Quarrier Street.

Or someone new to that flap tops up your vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park by The Waterwheel.

The least known cars see it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, fleet cars, and the other motor of a home with one of each fuels.

Leave it switched off: that is the first step to an identical slip, anywhere in Ladyburn or the remainder of Inverclyde you happen to be.

## Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Ladyburn?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank.

Via the fuel filter, through the lines, and — given any running time — into the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's where it has gone.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any might appear, perhaps midway across Ladyburn or returning from Gibshill Forest.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M8, under 10 miles from Ladyburn, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Mileage matters: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in, and so heading towards Glasgow, under 25 miles away, gives a much bigger job than crossing Ladyburn to the car park by Aspiration.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once your engine has been run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped.

Permanent damage is very uncommon when it's caught early.

## Ladyburn: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A road beside Cappielow Park, a drive, a layby or a filling station: wherever your car has stopped around Ladyburn, we come to it.

Three replies shape the job, and so before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, about what quantity, and if the motor has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out together after your tank is emptied, on the spot.

Your system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Fresh diesel goes in after your filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that your car is tested.

Not run? Then expect about half an hour on site for most jobs.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The last step is to bleed the fuel system on fresh diesel.

Starting it comes next, and then you head off from where your car is parked, by Cartsdyke or on a driveway around Ladyburn.

It's checked on clean diesel to confirm it runs correctly before we head off.

Since the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a workshop never comes into it.

Afterwards, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of guessing.

No moving is needed. In Ladyburn, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you works: the car is drained on the spot, whether on a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Ladyburn: the cost of fixing it

No flat price could be honest, because every job is different.

Three things change the price: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one comes down to whether a van can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind Lady Octavia Sports Centre.

That's why every call from Ladyburn starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it's run.

Given those replies, the range narrows to a single firm number.

Before anyone sets off, you are told the quote on the phone. And payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## Ladyburn: still beside your car?

Leaving the vehicle alone is, then, the best move you can do.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it ran are everything our engineers ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the rest across Inverclyde, Ladyburn too.
