# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Lake? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep the engine off then keep your ignition off.

Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water.

Being water-based, it will not burn and won't blend with diesel; damage just comes once your pump begins pulling it.

In Lake, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your engine runs usually comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Lake: the first few minutes

Do these:

- Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you are at all close to moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the product and the quantity, so don't bin it away.

- Call right where you are. Say a BH15 4 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.

Things not to do:

- No starting your motor — not briefly, not to reposition the car.

- Your ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to start your pump.

- Adding more diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short stretch up Lake Road.

- Draining your tank on your own by the road isn't one to try.

Get the people behind the counter to help you move the vehicle off the pumps if you are on a forecourt in Lake, whether it is the Esso or elsewhere.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains just where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

It doesn't combine. After it's poured into the tank, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel.

It sinks, because it is heavier than diesel, and pools down where the intake takes its fuel from.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Lower Hamworthy last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there.

Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting till morning around Lake leaves things worse. Inside the tank alone, time costs nothing.

The water in it causes damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more significant than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Shell's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that is the whole issue.

No damage is done as long as it sits put, blended into the diesel — only when your motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

It cannot just be run through, since it doesn't burn.

Nor can it be thinned, since it separates again — and the next tankful won't clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Lake or out in Turlin Moor, does more harm than almost any other slip.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Not started? Then the AdBlue sits only in your tank, the easiest section of the whole system to clear, anywhere your car has stopped across Dorset.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Lake: how it ends up there

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles sits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It usually takes place outside the house, from a bottle bought on the journey home, not at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways cover the majority of them.

The top-up is hurried outside Twin Sails Infant and Nursery School, after the dash flashed with a warning as the kids were taken in.

Near Lulworth Close, someone tips a container in on the drive after work.

Else, in dim light outside The Yachtsman, the vehicle is topped up by a driver using that flap the first time.

It occurs most in the cars motorists know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Leave it off: that is the first step to the same slip, wherever around Lake or the rest of Dorset you happen to be.

## Lake: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank.

Through the filter, along the lines, and — given any running — into the injection pump and each injector: that's how far it travels.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard lights or cutting out: each might show up, perhaps midway across Lake or returning from Hamworthy Park.

Once safe, pull over and turn everything off — without restarting to test.

Every start pulls more of that through.

Exit the M27, under 25 miles from Lake, by the next junction and stop somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue further into your system. That's why crossing Lake to park beside Flying Boat fuel depot and a drive of under 50 miles towards Salisbury are such different jobs.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

We do all of the cleaning where your car has stopped, and once the engine has been run there is more of it.

Caught early, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

## Lake: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

We come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Lake: a side street close to Poole Harbour Canoe Club, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three replies shape the job, so before anything else our technicians ask which fluid was put in, roughly what quantity, and if your engine has turned over.

Next, draining the tank on the spot removes the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

What remains from AdBlue will not flush out unaided, so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts much more here than with petrol.

A test of the car follows at the end, after clean diesel is added and the fuel filter is cleaned or, if necessary, replaced.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers arrive, if your motor hasn't run.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the street at night.

The final step is to prime your system on new diesel.

Whether it is a parking bay outside Hamworthy or a driveway around Lake, that is where our engineers start it and you head off.

Before we go, we make sure it is running correctly with new diesel in.

We do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never has to be taken to a workshop.

Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

## About Lake and where it is

Lake is a coastal suburban area in Dorset, situated near the shores of Poole Harbour, with nearby Hamworthy and Rockley Sands. Lake sits at a low elevation of around 5 metres, close to the sandy beaches and scenic coastline of the South West. Lake is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its residential nature and appeal to families and commuters alike. Lake is also near Ham Hill, which offers scenic views of the surrounding area.

## AdBlue drains across Dorset, Lake included

The vans that answer AdBlue jobs in Lake also cover the locations around it, Hamworthy, Ham Hill and Rockley Sands among them, and most of Dorset beyond, across the BH postcode area.

Assuming doesn't help close to a county line or anywhere tricky to pin down; phone and check.

A van that comes to you fits Lake, a residential suburb: there's no need to bring your vehicle to us, since our technicians drain it there, in a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## Lake: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There is no honest single quote, since the jobs aren't the same.

What changes the price is, first of all, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind St Michael's Church Centre.

That's why each call from Lake starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it's run.

Their answers narrow the range right down to one figure.

You hear that quote by phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## Alongside the vehicle in Lake, still?

In that case, touch nothing — that is the most helpful step there is.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, plus whether the engine ran is all our engineers ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder across Dorset, Lake too.
