# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Lambourn? Keep It Switched Off

Motor off, ignition off: that is where you start if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the system pulls it in.

Caught before your motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Lambourn.

Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Lambourn: the first few minutes

To do:

- So nobody can turn your ignition on, take the keys away.

- If you are at all near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and about how much, save the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call right where you are. Say a RG17 8 postcode or the closest street sign, and no one has to search for you.

Do not:

- Shifting your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to start your motor.

- Turning your key to ignition by itself sets the pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- Pouring in more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short distance along Parsonage Lane.

- Beside the road, don't try draining it on your own.

The attendants working at any Lambourn filling station — the Shell among them — will normally lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask.

Parked on your own driveway? Then it stays just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your motor.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, and there it treats the fumes.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays apart rather than blending — entirely different from fuel.

It drops, because it's denser than diesel, and pools down where the pickup takes its supply from.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Eastbury overnight and has not been started since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of your tank, undrawn — though it would be first through if the motor runs, before any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of damage.

It eats at certain metals found in fuel components, attacking any part it touches until it's cleared completely. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and settle in narrow channels.

Overnight, a vehicle parked around Lambourn with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it is only in that tank, it doesn't.

The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger fault?

A problem of thinned fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol at the JET.

Blended through the diesel and left still, it's no threat at that stage; running the motor does the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is simply the wrong one.

It cannot just be run through, because it does not burn.

It doesn't stay mixed, so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Lambourn Woodlands or the middle of Lambourn.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and that tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Berkshire the vehicle is standing.

## Lambourn: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors rests right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It usually happens at home, from a bottle grabbed on the journey home, rather than at the forecourt.

A few familiar ways cover most cases.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Lambourn CofE Primary School.

In the evening, a bottle goes in on a driveway close to Newbury Street.

Else, in dim light by The George, your car gets refilled by someone using that flap for the first time.

It comes up the most in a hire car, a new vehicle, a company vehicle, or the other vehicle of a family with both fuel types — the vehicles people know the least.

Wherever in Berkshire, Lambourn as well, the slip does not change, and neither does the first step: keep it off.

## Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Lambourn?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Via the filter, through the pipework, and — given any running — into the high-pressure pump and each injector: that's how far it travels.

You may notice the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Mill Lane Recreation Ground or halfway across Lambourn.

Once you safely can, pull over then turn everything off — without turning it on again to see.

Each start pulls more of it through.

Lambourn lies under 3 miles from the M4; if you were on it, exit at the next junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of carrying on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Lambourn to the car park by St. Michael's and All Angels' Church is a very different job from a run towards Oxford, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile.

Let us know about how far it had come.

Once the engine has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has stopped.

Very rarely does it leave long-term damage if it's caught quickly.

## Lambourn: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Anywhere it has stopped around Lambourn — a filling station, a layby, a drive, a road by Lambourn Library — our van comes to the car.

Which fluid went in, roughly the quantity, plus whether the engine has been run: our engineers check first, because those shape the job.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave together after your tank is drained, right there.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush counts: the whole system is flushed right through since what remains won't wash out by itself.

Next, the fuel filter: flushed, or replaced when it has to be. After that clean diesel, and then a test of your car.

About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where your engine hasn't run.

Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

The final step is to bleed the fuel system on clean diesel.

Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where the vehicle is parked, outside Hungerford or on a drive around Lambourn.

It is checked on fresh diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before our technicians go.

Our engineers do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never has to be taken to a workshop.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once the job is done.

Guessing doesn't help by a county line or somewhere hard to describe; phone and check.

No moving is needed. In Lambourn, a village, a mobile service works: your vehicle is emptied where it stands, whether on a drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Lambourn?

There's no fair single quote, because the jobs aren't the same.

The price moves first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it depends on where the vehicle is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind The Lambourn Centre.

For that in mind, every call from Lambourn begins with the identical trio — what was put in, how much, whether it ran — before a quote.

Once those are known, a range becomes a single fixed number.

You get that quote by phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Look at your insurance while we're on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## Still next to your car in Lambourn?
